The evolution in design research has shifted from a user-centered design approach to co-design approach. With co-designing, roles of designers and users have changed. In growing co-creation and co-design notions, user is seen as a partner, not as a passive object of study. In current undergraduate industrial design education in Turkey, user research is done in limited steps during design process. User observations that are required for students during their design processes are done outside of studio courses with the students' own opportunities. Yet students face difficulties in design process of the products especially the ones they have not experienced before. This study aims to apply 'designing with users' notion instead of 'designing for users' into a practice in education field. The goals of this study are; to benefit from users who are experts of their experiences as teammates during the design process and to satisfy user's expectations with the end product by using an alternative approach in design education. Two design projects were conducted with 12 third-year industrial design students from Gazi University and six volunteer users in 302 Industrial Design course. Three groups, each consisting of six (four students and two users), were formed to design products according to project briefs. Users participated in the problem definition and idea generation sessions as codesigners during design process. A questionnaire and interviews were used to collect data about students' remarks on participation of users. Students evaluated what they learned from co-designing and how users contributed to design process. The results of the surveys reflect that efficiency of design process can be improved with participation and collaboration of users. Users can play large roles from idea generation to concept development. Consequently, it was observed that co-designing can be efficiently implemented into undergraduate industrial design education. An Agentic account of design intentionality in computational architecture
Tüntaş, Duygu; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2018)
This thesis aims at understanding alterations in the conceptualization of design intentionality in relation to technological advances that bring new synthetic configurations to the world of design. The concept of intentionality used to be defined as central to human consciousness hence design intention regarded as exclusive to the human mind. The contemporary technological/ontological condition seems to displace this conceptualization of design intentionality sustained in conventional design processes, to t...
Generative Design Research for Sustainability: Exemplary Cases for the Adaptation of the EC Guide Tool and the ERM Method
Kulaksız, Mert; Güngör Boncukçu, Itır; Oğur, Dilruba; Paksoy, İsmail Yavuz; Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (Intellect Ltd, 2019-07-01)
As design has gone through change, growth, and expansion of meaning and interpretation in practice and education, so has design research. The traditional boundaries of design are dissolving, and connections are being established with other fields at an exponential rate. Based on the proceedings from the 2017 International Association of Societies of Design Research conference, the Re:Research series is an edited collection that showcases a curated selection of eighty-three papers—just over half of the works...
An Innovative Design Education Approach: Computational Design Teaching for Architecture
Çolakoğlu, Birgül ; Yazar, Tuğrul (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2007-6-01)
This paper describes an innovative design education approach developed to explore new intellectual and theoretical directions of design generation. It utilizes algorithms as a tool for introducing the concept of design computing to graduate students of architecture. The graduate course titled “Designing the Design” is thus developed. The aim of the course is to introduce to the students of architecture the computational design thinking and the new emerging language and method of designing. Examples from the...
The role of human-centered designer in a multinational company through innovative product development for African BoP communities
Işık Tosun, Hande; Börekçi, Naz A. G. Z.; Department of Industrial Design (2020)
The importance of the field of design is increasing in the face of complex problems humanity has been facing. Respectively, the orientation of design is shifting from products to strategies that facilitate corporate transformation. In parallel with this transformation, designers take new and diverse roles. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding these roles. This study aims to explore the roles the designer (author) takes in a multinational home appliances company through the innovative product developm...
Co-learning for sustainable design: The case of a circular design collaborative project in Ireland
Bakırlıoğlu, Yekta; McMahon, Muireann (2021-01-10)
© 2020 Elsevier LtdIncorporating concerns of sustainability and circularity into design practice is undoubtedly important for both design research and education. There is a need to equip novice designers with the skills to facilitate a sustainability-focused future, whilst also collaborating with industry to implement these concerns into contemporary design practices. On the one hand, SMMEs and small teams in other sectors (i.e. public) lack the resources and time to improve their knowledge, to explore alte...
