Age of Information (AoI) has gained importance as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for characterizing the freshness of information in information-update systems and time-critical applications. Recent theoretical research on the topic has generated significant understanding of how various algorithms perform in terms of this metric on various system models and networking scenarios. In this paper, we study AoI behavior on experimental implementations of packet flows among IoT nodes and over the Internet. AoI measurements are taken for several transport protocols such as TCP, UDP and web-socket, on wired and wireless links. Practical issues such as synchronization and selection of hardware along with transport protocol, and their effects on AoI are discussed. The results provide insight toward application and transport layer mechanisms for optimizing AoI in real-life networks.

Age-of-Information in Practice: Status Age Measured over TCP/IP Connections through WiFi, Ethernet and LTE
Sonmez, Canberk; Baghaee, Sajjad; Ergisi, Abdussamed; Uysal, Elif (2018-06-07)
The Age of Information (AoI) has gained importance as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) measuring freshness of information in information-update systems and time-critical applications. Almost all the previous literature on AoI has been theoretical. Most of these theoretical studies assumed knowledge of the statistics of network delays and/or link service times. However, in real-life networks, various factors contribute to these parameters, resulting in a complicated effect on age. This paper reports the res...
Towards a Multimodal Model of Cognitive Workload Through Synchronous Optical Brain Imaging and Eye Tracking Measures
Isbilir, Erdinc; Çakır, Murat Perit; Acartürk, Cengiz; Tekerek, Ali Simsek (2019-10-23)
Recent advances in neuroimaging technologies have rendered multimodal analysis of operators' cognitive processes in complex task settings and environments increasingly more practical. In this exploratory study, we utilized optical brain imaging and mobile eye tracking technologies to investigate the behavioral and neurophysiological differences among expert and novice operators while they operated a human-machine interface in normal and adverse conditions. In congruence with related work, we observed that e...
Scheduling Status Updates to Minimize Age of Information with an Energy Harvesting Sensor
Bacınoğlu, Baran Tan; Uysal, Elif (2017-06-30)
Age of Information is a measure of the freshness of status updates in monitoring applications and update-based systems. We study a real-time sensing scenario with a sensor which is restricted by time-varying energy constraints and battery limitations. The sensor sends updates over a packet erasure channel with no feedback. The problem of finding an age-optimal threshold policy, with the transmission threshold being a function of the energy state and the estimated current age, is formulated. The average age ...
Measuring age of information on real-life connections
Beytur, Hasan Burhan; Baghaee, Sajjad; Uysal, Elif (2019-04-01)
Age of Information (AoI) is a relatively new metric to measure freshness of networked application such as real-time monitoring of status updates or control. The AoI metric is discussed in the literature mainly in a theoretical way. In this work, we want to point out the issues related to the measuring AoI-related values, such as synchronization and calculation of the values. We discussed the effect of synchronization error in the measurement and a solution for calculating an estimate of average AoI without ...
Towards verification of component compositions incorporating variability
Kaya, Muhammed Çağrı; Suloglu, Selma; Doğru, Ali Hikmet (null; 2015-11-05)
A new approach to formally verify component compositions incorporating variability is proposed which eases variability-intensive component-oriented system development by reducing the complexity of verification. A step by step model transformation approach from XCOSEML to Featured Transition System (FTS) is used which automates generation of FTS models, namely required feature model of the variable component composition and its fPromela specification. XCOSEML is a domain specific language that establishes a ...
