Numerical simulation of laminar reaction flows
Tarhan, Tanıl; Selçuk, Nevin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
Novel sequential and parallel computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes based on method of lines (MOL) approach were developed for the numerical simulation of multi-component reacting flows using detailed transport and thermodynamic models. Both codes were applied to the prediction of a confined axisymmetric laminar co-flowing methane-air diffusion flame for which experimental data were available in the literature. Flame-sheet model for infinite-rate chemistry and one-, two-, and five- and ten-step reduced fi...
Numerical simulation of wave-induced scour and backfilling processes beneath submarine pipelines
Fuhrman, David R; Baykal, Cüneyt; Sumer, B Mutlu; Jacobsen, Niels G; Fredsoe, Jorgen (2014-12-01)
A fully-coupled hydrodynamic/morphodynamic numerical model is presented and utilized for the simulation of wave-induced scour and backfilling processes beneath submarine pipelines. The model is based on solutions to Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with k - omega turbulence closure, with additional bed and suspended load descriptions forming the basis for sea bed morphology. The morphological evolution is updated continuously, rather than being based e.g. on period- or other time-averaging...

Numerical simulation of hydrodynamic planar motion mechanism test for underwater vehicles
Can, Mustafa; Eyi, Sinan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2014)
Several captive tests, such as; PMM (Planar Motion Mechanism), RA (Rotating Arm), straight-line towing tests and CMM (Coning Motion Mechanism) can be conducted to obtain hydrodynamic coefficients or maneuvering derivatives that are necessary for system simulation of AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles). Development of computer technology provides an opportunity to solve flow problems by using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Therefore modeling hydrodynamic tests by using CFD methods is another option to...
Numerical Simulation of Rarefied Laminar Flow past a Circular Cylinder
Çelenligil, Mehmet Cevdet (2014-07-18)
Numerical simulations have been obtained for two-dimensional laminar flows past a circular cylinder in the transitional regime. Computations are performed using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method for Knudsen numbers of 0.02 and 0.2 and Mach numbers of 0.102 and 0.4. For these conditions, Reynolds number ranges from 0.626 to 24.63 and the flows are steady. Results show that separation occurs in the wake region for the flow with Mach number of 0.4 and Knudsen number of 0.02, but for the other eases flow...
