Numerical simulation of wave-induced scour and backfilling processes beneath submarine pipelines
Fuhrman, David R; Baykal, Cüneyt; Sumer, B Mutlu; Jacobsen, Niels G; Fredsoe, Jorgen (2014-12-01)
A fully-coupled hydrodynamic/morphodynamic numerical model is presented and utilized for the simulation of wave-induced scour and backfilling processes beneath submarine pipelines. The model is based on solutions to Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with k - omega turbulence closure, with additional bed and suspended load descriptions forming the basis for sea bed morphology. The morphological evolution is updated continuously, rather than being based e.g. on period- or other time-averaging...
Numerical simulation of infiltration and evaporation for unsaturated infinite soil slopes
Kenanoğlu, Melih Birhan; Toker, Nabi Kartal; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Rainfall triggered landslides are common threat in many regions of the world and cause loss of lives and properties. These are shallow failures (typically 3-5 m depths from the ground surface) that occur along a plane parallel to the ground surface where the groundwater level is located at significant depths below, and they are triggered after a heavy rainfall in a short time or after days of lower intensity rainfall (Huvaj et al., 2013). Considering a failure plane oriented parallel to the ground surface, ...
Numerical simulation of ice accretion and consequent power loss estimation in wind turbine blades
Özgen, Serkan; Berker, Ayşe Meriç; Çakmak, Ali (null; 2019-07-01)
The aim of this study is to simulate atmospheric ice accretion on wind turbine blades and to estimate power losses. A computational tool is developed that comprises six modules, one for estimating the local flow velocity and the angle of attack using the Blade Element Momentum Method (BEM), one for solving the flow field employing the Panel Method, one for computing the droplet trajectories with the Lagrangian approach, a module for calculating the convective heat transfer coefficients using the Integral Bo...
Numerical Simulation of Rarefied Laminar Flow past a Circular Cylinder
Çelenligil, Mehmet Cevdet (2014-07-18)
Numerical simulations have been obtained for two-dimensional laminar flows past a circular cylinder in the transitional regime. Computations are performed using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method for Knudsen numbers of 0.02 and 0.2 and Mach numbers of 0.102 and 0.4. For these conditions, Reynolds number ranges from 0.626 to 24.63 and the flows are steady. Results show that separation occurs in the wake region for the flow with Mach number of 0.4 and Knudsen number of 0.02, but for the other eases flow...
