Surface sediments from the Yes,ilirmak River and the near coastal area in the Black Sea were collected using sediment traps to assess the spatial distributions of persistent organic pollutants and find their potential sources. Analyses were carried out to determine the concentrations of the persistent organic pollutants of seventeen polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, seven polychlorinated biphenyls, and eight organochlorine pesticides using high-resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry systems. Analysis showed that the three main components of persistent organic pollutants (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and organochlorine pesticides) primary sources are industrial activities. In addition, the widespread occurrence of persistent organic pollutants in the watershed surface sediments taken from the Yes,ilirmak River basin showed that agricultural and urban areas are also diffuse persistent organic pollutants sources.

Modeling the influence of hydrodynamic processes on anchovy distribution and connectivity in the black sea Karadeniz'deki hamsi dağılımı ve bölgeler arası bağlantısı üzerine hidrodinamik proseslerin etkisinin modellenmesi

Dispersal mechanisms of Black Sea anchovy larvae (Engraulis encrasicolus ponticus) across the Black Sea were studied with an individual based anchovy larvae model embedded in a Lagrangian model using surface currents calculated from daily dynamic height topography maps of altimeter data during a period of three years (2001-2003). Particles representing anchovy eggs were released at different sites during June to August and their movement was tracked over time. Drifters were advected for 36 days, representin...
SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION, COMPOSITION AND DNA BARCODING OF ZOOPLANKTON IN THE SOUTHERN BLACK SEA (JULY 2013)
Öztürk, İlayda Destan; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2015-10-07)
Spatial distribution and composition of zooplankton was studied in the southern Black Sea at 46 stations in July 2013. The southern Black Sea was examined as three different study areas namely; western, central and eastern regions. Each region was also examined as inshore and offshore to determine the difference in zooplankton communities. Additionally a DNA barcoding study was also performed with samples collected from seven stations in the southern Black Sea to generate a gene library of zooplankton speci...
Spatial and Temporal Variations of Inorganic and Organic Forms of Phosphorus in the Surface and Deep Waters of Erdemli Shelf Zone of Mersin Bay
DOĞAN SAĞLAMTİMUR, NESLİHAN; Tuğrul, Süleyman (2013-01-01)
The aim of this study was to understand spatial and temporal variations of inorganic and organic forms of phosphorus in the surface and deep waters of Erdemli shelf zone of the Mersin Bay. For this goal, timeseries hydrographical and phosphorus data were obtained monthly at the three selected stations between December 2001 and December 2003. The present results have shown that the concentrations of different fractions of total phosphorus displayed a decreasing trend from nearshore to shelfbreak zone of the ...
SPATIAL VARIATIONS OF PARTICULATE ORGANIC MATTER (POM) COMPOSITION AND CONCENTRATIONS IN SURFACE WATERS AND SEDIMENTS OF THE MERSIN BAY

Spatial and temporal variations of hydrophysical properties (temperature, salinity, density), eutrophication-related parameters (nutrients, Chl-a, dissolved oxygen) and particulate organic matter (POM) concentrations and composition (C/N/P) in water column and surface sediments were examined at 33 stations between April 2014 and February 2015 in Mersin Bay located at northeastern (NE) Mediterranean. Regional and seasonal distributions of nutrients in the Mersin Bay are affected by human-induced pressures. ...
