City and regional planning is a complex scientific era where different scientific fields as social and natural sciences interact with each other. Planning is an open system, it couldn’t be taken into account separately from external influences, it cannot be isolated where outside factors are neutralized and it is not one mechanism operating alone and it is affected by other mechanisms. Therefore, planning education system can change from one country to another or even from one university to another in the same country. Different methods and courses can have impacts on the skills of planners who graduate from those universities. In this respect, the aim of this study is to analyse undergraduate education system of city and regional planning department by focusing on studio education. Accordingly, Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China, Politecnico di Torino, Italy, and University of North Carolina, USA are chosen to be comparatively examined. In this regard, in the first part, the general education system of planning in these universities will be figured out by analysing their curriculums. In the second part, studio education, where planning and design activities at different scales are conducted and the output of different courses are integrated, will be analyzed with respect to course syllabuses and studio outputs if possible. In the third part, the comparison between those universities in terms of general education system and studio learning process will be carried out to be discussed and finally the question of how planning education could be developed in changing globalized world conditions will be discussed.

The limits to urban revolution: the transformation of Ankara, Turkey, under the Justice and Development Party
Bayırbağ, Mustafa Kemal; Schindler, Seth; Penpecioglu, Mehmet (2022-09-01)
Contemporary urbanization is characterized by the incorporation of historically isolated places into vast urbanized networks that are planetary in scope. We underscore the political processes and actors that instantiate urban transformation. Drawing on Lefebvre's writings on urban revolutions - in plural - we show that he considered comprehensive urban transformation the result of multiple place-based revolutions that are typically driven by a state. We then present Turkey as an example in which the Justice...
Approaches to Climate Change in Spatial Planning and Design: International and Turkish Experiences
Gedikli, Bahar (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2018-01-01)
Climate change falls into theoretical and practical concerns of many disciplines ranging from natural to social sciences, engineering, urban planning, architecture and administrative sciences. Spatial planning can be an effective tool for climate mitigation and adaptation. Obviously, with regard to its spatial scale, the scope, content and form of the plan would vary in handling the phenomenon. For instance, while a strategic spatial plan would define a larger framework for climate sensitive action at regio...
The Social Sciences Interdisciplinarity for Astronomy and Astrophysics -- Lessons from the History of NASA and Related Fields
Berea, Anamaria; Denning, Kathryn L.; Vidaurri, Monica; Arcand, Kimberly; Oman-reagan, Michael; Bellovary, Jillian; Aydınoğlu, Arsev Umur; Lupisella, Mark (null, 2019-07-01)
In this paper we showcase the importance of understanding and measuring interdisciplinarity and other -disciplinarity concepts for all scientists, the role social sciences have historically played in NASA research and missions, the sparsity of social science interdisciplinarity in space and planetary sciences, including astronomy and astrophysics, while there is an imperative necessity for it, and the example of interdisciplinarity between social sciences and astrobiology. Ultimately we give voice to ...

The main subject of the thesis is planning “cultural routes” as a method for conservation of cultural and natural heritage areas at regional scale. Defining a framework of conceptual principles which should be considered in spatial planning of cultural routes and regional networks constitutes the major aim of the thesis. Within the scope of the study, a new developing concept recently, cultural routes are discussed as a tool for sustaining historic and local values of rural and archaeological landscapes. In ...
