Back to the Future: Interpretation of Post-COVID-19 Architecture through 1960s Futurism

2021-10-01
COVID-19 has changed the configuration and needs in architectural and urban spaces. Today, only the pandemic's short-term consequences have been seen in architecture, whereas the longterm influences are still being discussed. This article aims to look for an insight into postpandemic architecture in the long term through the futuristic architectural projects of the 1960s. For that purpose, this study primarily conducts a literature review about post-disease architecture after 19th-century epidemics. Following that, three significant figures of the futurist architecture movement, Buckminster Fuller, Reyner Banham, and Archigram, were chosen as case studies to highlight the sterile, isolated, and technology bounded aspects of this movement. By also looking at the healthy environment criteria and the short-term architecturaldiscussions after the COVID-19 outbreak, the selected architects' distinctive theories and unique science-fiction projects were examined and discussed concerning contagious diseases and pandemic's reflections on spaces. According to the interpretation of these architect's works and arguments, an open-ended, nomadic, formless architecture in which technology and infrastructure gave the individual better freedom could be associated with the post-pandemic built environment.

Optimum topological design of geometrically nonlinear single layer latticed domes using coupled genetic algorithm
Saka, M. P. (2007-11-01)
Single layer latticed domes are lightweight and elegant structures that provide cost-effective solutions to cover the large areas without intermediate supports. The topological design of these structures present difficulty due to the fact that the number of joints and members as well as the height of the dome keeps on changing during the design process. This makes it necessary to automate the numbering of joints and members and the computation of the coordinates of joints in the dome. On the other hand the ...
Out-of-plane seismic behavior of brick and pumice concrete infill walls built into the RC frame
Aktaş, Saime Selin; Canbay, Erdem; Department of Earthquake Studies (2023-1-27)
Unreinforced infill walls are widely used non-structural elements in structures worldwide for architectural and engineering disciplines. The seismic capacity and response of unreinforced infill walls have been ignored until realizing the importance of these members during many seismic events and their aftermaths. Thus, the out-of-plane behavior of infill walls has become a topic that has been popular to investigate in the last decades for civil engineers especially. Although different infill materials are u...
Investigating the publicness of administrative spaces and a case study in Bakanlıklar District : Ankara
Kelleci, Semih; Barlas, Mehmet Adnan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2012)
Public spaces are the core elements of shaping the social life in the cities, and design of public spaces is a key component of urban design. As tools of inclusive or exclusive design methods of public space vary, user group’s publicness increase or decrease relatively. So, who is defined as public for the design of public space is the main concern shaping the built environment. Centers are the peak points of publicness in cities and as a central activity administration is indispensible for every settlement...
Vernacular timber houses of Uzungöl: examining / analyzing them in their re-functioning process
Çiçek, Ümit Gökhan; Gökce, Fuat; Department of Architecture (2012)
The aim of this study is to define structural and architectural features of vernacular houses in Uzungöl, town of Çaykara, Trabzon and to determine intervention types of houses in order to prevent loosing original architectural characteristics. For this purpose, the studies that were carried out about the history, geographical/physical character, settlement pattern and socio-economic character of the region in general and the district of the study area were surveyed. To be able to take reliable results, a s...
COLLAGE IN URBAN DESIGN: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF DESIGN THINKING
Sönmez, Büşra; Çalışkan, Olgu; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2022-8-31)
Although collage has been widely discussed as a design method in architecture and landscape architecture, the use of collage in urban design needs further discussion. Apart from being an art form and technique beyond the physical act of collage, as in the transition between “painting and sculpture”, collage has widespread use in visual arts, design, music, literature, and photography. While collage is taken further with modern painting, it also affects the perception of modernist space in architecture and u...
