Landslides are considered as one of the most devastating natural hazards in Iran, causing extensive damage and loss of life. Landslide susceptibility maps for landslide prone areas can be used to plan for and mitigate the consequences of catastrophic landsliding events. Here, we developed a deep convolutional neural network (CNN-DNN) for mapping landslide susceptibility, and evaluated it on the Isfahan province, Iran, which has not previously been assessed on such a scale. The proposed model was trained and validated using training (80%) and testing (20%) datasets, each containing relevant data on historical landslides, field records and remote sensing images, and a range of geomorphological, geological, environmental and human activity factors as covariates. The CNN-DNN model prediction accuracy was tested using a wide range of statistics from the confusion matrix and error indices from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The CNN-DNN model was evaluated comprehensively by comparing it to several state-of-the-art benchmark machine learning techniques including the support vector machine (SVM), logistic regression (LR), Gaussian naive Bayes (GNB), multilayer perceptron (MLP), Bernoulli Naive Bayes (BNB) and decision tree (DT) classifiers. The CNN-DNN model for landslide susceptibility mapping was found to predict more accurately than the benchmark algorithms, with an AUC = 90.9%, IRs = 84.8%, MSE = 0.17, RMSE = 0.40, and MAPE = 0.42. The map provided by the CNN-DNN clearly revealed a high-susceptibility area in the west and southwest, related to the main Zagros trend in the province. These findings can be of great utility for landslide risk management and land use planning in the Isfahan province.

Flood risk mapping using economic, environmental and sociadimensions
Yeğin, Murat; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Flood is one of the most destructive natural hazards in Turkey. It is unavoidable but its impacts can be minimized by taking necessary precautions. Flood risk mapping is a developing concept and it is used to determine economically, environmentally and socially risky areas. European Council stipulated the member countries to prepare flood hazard maps showing extents of low, medium and high probability flood events. These maps should also be prepared for Turkey during the European Union harmonization process...
Preliminary seismic vulnerability assessment of existing reinforced concrete buildings in Turkey - Part I: Statistical model based on structural characteristics
Ozcebe, G; Yücemen, Mehmet Semih; Aydogan, V; Yakut, Ahmet (2003-05-13)
The 1999 earthquakes caused huge damage and economic losses in Turkey. The city of Duzce, hit by the second earthquake of Mw=7.2, suffered widespread damage to many RC buildings. Survey teams conducted post-earthquake evaluations on selected buildings that suffered various degrees of damage. The information collected was analyzed to set up a correlation between the attributes affecting seismic performance and the observed damage. A procedure, developed using a statistical method called discriminant analysis...
Analysis of existing building stock according to mitigation plan objectives
Hasdemir, Berna; Balamir, Murat; Department of City and Regional Planning (2010)
Earthquakes in Turkey, among all natural disasters claim the highest losses in terms of human lives, material and economic assets. Most of the lives are lost within the collapsed buildings, and most of the material and economic losses are again directly related to the functional capacities of the building stock. The method of risk assessment in the existing building stock is therefore an essential step in the maintenance of safer urban environments. Analysis of risks in the building stock is usually claimed...
Broadband ground motion simulation within Duzce city (Turkey)
Özmen, Ekin; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Kestel, Sevtap Ayşe; Department of Earthquake Studies (2019)
Earthquakes have more hazardous and devastating effects in populated areas. To prevent damage and reduce the risks, broadband records are collected to use in the seismic hazard assessment and engineering seismology. In areas with significant seismic activity and insufficient seismic networks, the simulated ground motions become more important. Broadband ground motion simulations are performed for 12 November 1999 Duzce earthquake. Deterministic simulations are performed for low frequency part and stochastic...
Comparison of mean site-specific response spectra in Turkey with the design spectra of AASHTO

Seismic design of bridges is a significant problem for all seismically-active countries including Turkey which has gone through recent destructive earthquakes. Bridges are important elements of transportation and their robustness is important in the aftermath of major earthquakes. Turkish engineers currently employ a modified version of AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) LFD Design Specifications for bridge design. Within the scope of a national project (TÜBİTAK 110G...
