Solidarity Clashes with Geopolitics in EU-Turkey Relations

COVID-19 hit Turkey and the EU (European Union) at a time when bilateral relations were already strained. Early in March, the two sides were engaged in a bitter conflict regarding migration, among other issues. The dominant perception in the country was that the EU was showing little solidarity with Turkey in managing irregular migration. As the COVID-19 crisis deepened, with both the humanitarian and the economic repercussions taking their toll, bilateral conflicts briefly gave way to acts of solidarity between the two sides. This was facilitated by Turkish medical assistance to various EU, Western Balkan and Eastern neighbourhood countries. Nonetheless, this period of solidarity and goodwill was short lived, as the EU quickly took steps in consolidating internal solidarity. Geopolitical conflicts in the Eastern Mediterranean soon defined the relationship’s agenda. The crisis of Turkish-EU relations seemed slowly to translate into a crisis of solidarity, almost leading to a form of schadenfreude in which Turkish authorities utilised the ongoing pandemic as evidence of poor governance and an exclusionary approach by the European states.

Turkey: A Vicious Cycle of Euroscepticism?
Düzgit, Senem; Şenyuva, Özgehan (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021-01-01)
Relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU) are currently facing an impasse. After a long period of stagnation, accession negotiations, which began in 2005, are now de facto frozen. Recent public opinion polls in Europe record an all-time low popularity of Turkish membership across the European public, whereas the European political elite has long dropped the discourse on Turkish accession in favour of a “strategic partnership” with Turkey. A similar picture is also observed in Turkey, with growing...

Since World War (WW) II, powerful steps in terms of enlargement and deepening have been taken forward to integrate Europe within the context of an organization called as the European Union (EU). Despite powerful steps, in recent years the EU has been facing challenging exams (constitutional crisis in 2005, the Euro Area (EA) crisis in 2009, refugee crisis, terrorist attacks etc.) which adversely affect the dynamism of integration, and consequently it is seen that there are some backward steps (Brexit and ot...
Impacts of policy changes on Turkish agriculture : an optimization model with maximum entropy
Eruygur, H. Ozan; Çakmak, Erol; Department of Economics (2006)
Turkey moves towards integration with EU since 1963. The membership will involve full liberalization of trade in agricultural products with EU. The impact of liberalization depends on the path of agricultural policies in Turkey and the EU. On the other hand, agricultural protection continues to be the most controversial issue in global trade negotiations of World Trade Organization (WTO). To evaluate the impacts of policy scenarios, an economic modeling approach based on non-linear mathematical programming ...
Macroeconomic Implications of the European Integration on the Turkish Economy
Bekmez, Selahattin; Kennedy, P. Lynn (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2001-1-01)
The arguments about full membership in the EU has become a priority for Turkey in the last decade, because Turkey’s joining the EU will have a strong impact on Turkey’s and the EU’s macroeconomic structure. In order to analyze the impacts of Turkish accession into the EU, a computable general equilibrium model has been developed and the results of various policy scenarios have been compared. The model considers the imperfect competition in the Turkish manufacturing sector. Simulation results showed that ful...
