The Mediterranean and the Black Seas are connected through Bosphorus, Marmara Sea and Dardanelles (Turkish Straits System, TSS). In this study, we examined the spatial distribution of copepods and investigate their production and grazing. The aim was to understand the transfer of phytoplankton/microzooplankton production up the food chain in TSS and Aegean Sea during spring. The phytoplankton and microzooplankton biomass and production showed a clear decreasing trend from Bosphorus to the Aegean Sea, wherea...
Palaeoenvironment and human interaction during the last 4k years in the dried lake sediments (amik lake, southern turkey): evidences of lake level changes
El Ouahabi, Meriam; Hubert-ferrari, Aurelia; Auwera, Vander; Avşar, Ulaş; Karabacak, Volkan (2019-02-01)
The Amik Basin in the Eastern Mediterranean region has been continuously occupied since 6000-7000 BC. The landscape has sustained with highly variable anthropic pressure culminating during the Late Roman Period when the Antioch city reached its golden age. The basin also sustained a high seismic activity (M≥7) as it is a releasing step-over along the Dead Sea Fault. The study focuses on the sedimentary record of the Amik Lake occupying the central part of the Basin. Our objective is to constrain major paleo...
Spatial variations of active stress patterns and frequencymagnitude distribution of earthquakes in Western Anatolia, Turkey
Shah, S Tanvir; Özacar, Atilla Arda (null; 2018-04-23)
Western Anatolia is one of the most important tectonic elements of Turkey, and constitutes the eastern margin of Aegean Extensional Province. The area is one of the most seismically active continental margins around the globe experiencing N-S extension. Earthquake data in this study is used to analyze the active stress patterns and to estimate the earthquake return periods for different sub-regions in western Anatolia. Focal mechanism solution data is used for determining the orientations and ratios of prin...
Internally displaced persons and the Cyprus peace process
Psaltis, Charis; Cakal, Huseyin; Loizides, Neophytos; Kuşçu Bonnenfant, Işık (SAGE Publications, 2020-01-01)
The article focuses on Greek Cypriot internally displaced persons and their attitudes towards the island's reunification talks. We utilize quantitative data from two representative sample surveys, conducted in 2016-2017, which probed respondents on their views on territorial readjustments, property provisions and power-sharing. Contrary to the current findings in the literature, internally displaced persons status is associated with higher levels of support for a negotiated peace settlement. The article exa...
Insights into biaxial extensional tectonics: an example from the Sandikli Graben, West Anatolia, Turkey
Cihan, M; Sarac, G; Gokce, O (Wiley, 2003-01-01)
West Anatolia, together with the Aegean Sea and the easternmost part of Europe, is one of the best examples of continental extensional tectonics. It is a complex area bounded by the Aegean-Cyprus Arc to the south and the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) to the north. Within this complex and enigmatic framework, the Sandikli Graben (10 km wide, 30 km long) has formed at the eastern continuation of the Western Anatolian extensional province at the north-northwestward edge of the Isparta Angle. Recent studies...
