Development of facile synthesis strategies for complex-shaped gold nanostructures have great significance owing to their prospective applications. Herein, we demonstrate a remarkably simple single-step recipe for the synthesis of micrometer sized gold particles with tailored nanostructured surfaces. We demonstrate that gold micro-particles (GMPs) can be synthesized simply by mixing HAuCl4, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), AgNO3 and ascorbic acid (AA), without the seed particles. This is contrary to the conventional belief that HAuCl4 cannot be completely reduced by AA in the presence of high concentration of CTAB. The surface morphology of GMPs can be tuned by changing the concentration of AA, whereas the size of the GMPs can be controlled by tuning the concentration of CTAB in the reaction medium. The GMPs have shown excellent potential for SERS applications. The simulation results show that each GMP has high concentration of intraparticle hotspots. The finite element simulation shows maximum enhancement factor in excess of 109, while the average experimental enhancement factor can be as high as 4 × 107. The simulation results also indicate that the presence of branches of different lengths enable GMPs to show efficient SERS sensing for multiple excitation sources. Therefore, GMPs have the capability to become universal SERS platforms.

Gold nanostar @ iron oxide core-shell nanostructures: synthesis, characterization, and demonstrated surface-enhanced Raman scattering properties
Nalbant Esentürk, Emren (2013-01-01)
Iron oxide-coated gold nanostars are produced by first synthesizing gold nanostars (ca 150 nm), then introducing a polyvinylpyrollidone coating followed by reducing iron(II) and iron(III) salts on the nanoparticle (NP) surface. Morphological and chemical composition characterizations of these composite nanomaterials were performed via field-emission transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy studies. The analysis revealed that the majority of the NPs had coating of approximately 1-5 nm ...
Stacking in Colloidal Nanoplatelets: Tuning Excitonic Properties
Guzelturk, Burak; Erdem, Onur; Olutas, Murat; Keleştemur, Yusuf; Demir, Hilmi Volkan (2014-12-01)
Colloidal semiconductor quantum wells, also commonly known as nanoplatelets (NPLs), have arisen among the most promising materials for light generation and harvesting applications. Recently, NPLs have been found to assemble in stacks. However, their emerging characteristics essential to these applications have not been previously controlled or understood. In this report, we systematically investigate and present excitonic properties of controlled column-like NPL assemblies. Here, by a controlled gradual pro...
Gold nanoparticle modified conducting polymer of 4-(2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole-1-l) benzenamine for potential use as a biosensing material

Gold nanoparticle (AuNP) modified conducting polymer of 4-(2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)benzenamine (SNS-NH2) was used as the biosensing platform for glucose analysis. Electrochemical measurements were carried out by following the consumed oxygen due to the enzymatic reaction of glucose oxidase (GOx) at -0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl. Optimisation of pH, enzyme loading, stability experiments were carried out. Effect of NP was investigated by monitoring the signal responses at different AuNP sizes and amounts. A ...
Grain refinement of al-si-mg cast alloys with niobium – boron addition
Aldoğan, Enver Burak; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2021-2-15)
The aim of this thesis is to observe the grain refinement effect of aluminum (Al), niobium (Nb) and boron (B) alloy for silicon and magnesium-based aluminum cast alloys, especially A357. When the silicon content exceeds the 3 % w.t on the aluminum, silicon and magnesium-based alloy, effectiveness of Al-Ti-B grain refiner decreases due to formation of titanium silicide precipitates, called as poisoning effect. The surface of the grain refining constitues are coated with titanium silicide, and number of TiB2 ...
Genotoxicity study of high aspect ratio silver nanowires

The genotoxicity potential of silver nanowires synthesized via the solution-based polyol method has been investigated. They were found to be non-mutagenic in three Salmonella strains and were not genotoxic in a clastogenicity assay in mice. Residual surfactant was found to have an effect on the toxicological properties of the nanowires by increasing the rate of Ag+ release. Residual surfactant can be easily degraded via a UV treatment.
