Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have widely transformed teaching and learning of higher education worldwide. Based on Biber's (1988) multi-dimensional analysis framework, this study uncovers linguistic features of English-medium MOOC video lectures in China and reveals lin-guistic variation across different disciplinary areas. The results suggest that the video lecture language in English-medium MOOCs provided by Chinese universities tends to be highly infor-mational, non-narrative, explicitly referential, low in persuasion, abstract, and formally planned. Different from traditional university lectures, the closest registers to the target MOOC video lectures in China include academic prose, official documents, and press reportage. Significant differences also exist across disciplinary areas regarding all six functional linguistic dimensions. Findings of this study may provide insights into how language is used in the emerging spoken register, which may further be taken into consideration by instructional designers and instructors of MOOCs. For countries where English is used as a second or additional language, such as China, the results may be of particular interest when designing English-medium MOOC video lectures.

An examination of presage, process and product dimensions in massive open online courses
Çelik, Berkan; Çağıltay, Kürşat; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2020-10-26)
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have made a great progress around the world in the recent years. Bilgeİş Online Learning Portal (bilgeis.net) is one of the most comprehensive MOOC portals providing pdMOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses for Professional Development) for any learner who would like to enroll in an online course in Turkey. This study provides overall understanding and exploration of presage, process, and product variables and the relationships between these variables using a variety of data ...
An analysis of course characteristics, learner characteristics, and certification rates in MITx MOOCs
Cagiltay, Nergiz Ercil; Çağıltay, Kürşat; Çelik, Berkan (Athabasca University Press, 2020-01-01)
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), capable of providing free (or low cost) courses for millions of learners anytime and anywhere, have gained the attention of researchers, educational institutions, and learners worldwide. Even though they provide several benefits, there are still some criticisms of MOOCs. For instance, MOOCs' high dropout rates or predominantly elite participation are considered to be important problems. In order to develop solutions for these problems, a deeper understanding of MOOCs is ...
An intervention framework for design and development of interactive video lectures based on video viewing behaviors: A learning analytics approach
Yürüm, Ozan Raşit; Yıldırım, İbrahim Soner; Taşkaya Temizel, Tuğba; Department of Information Systems (2021-9-7)
Video-based learning has become very popular together with the increase in the number of massive open online courses (MOOCs). Learners interacting with video naturally exhibit viewing behaviors based on clickstream interactions such as pause, forward, and backward. These are important inputs to predict learning variables and to develop an intervention framework. However, there is no guideline or method on how to use these behavioral patterns in favor of learners. The purpose of this study is to investigate ...
An Assessment of English Language Teaching Methods Courses: The Case of Middle East Technical University Foreign Language Education Program
Demirtaş Yiğit, Saniye; Ok, Ahmet; Department of Educational Sciences (2021-9-3)
The purpose of this study was to assess English Language Teaching (ELT) methods courses offered by undergraduate Foreign Language Education program of Middle East Technical University in relation to their goals, content, organization, implementation, student assessment and the courses’ alignment with the needs of the education sector, by gathering the opinions and experiences of novice teachers who graduated from the program and the faculty members who offer ELT methods courses. A combination of criterion s...
A comprehensive investigation of TPACK within pre-service teachers’ ICT profiles: Mind the gap!
Tondeur, Jo; Scherer, Ronny; Siddiq, Fazilat; Baran, Evrim (Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education, 2017-7-24)
This study aims to identify profiles of pre-service teachers in order to explore their readiness to integrate technology in education. The assumption is that pre-service teacher characteristics such as technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), go together with the influence of their teacher training. Specifically, this study examines whether pre-service teachers can be clustered on the basis of their TPACK, a typical set of ICT-related characteristics (e.g., general ICT attitudes, attitudes towar...
