Stresses in multi-layer coatings in Hertzian contact with a moving circular punch

2022-07-01
© 2022 Elsevier LtdThis article presents analytical solution procedures for moving Hertzian contact problems involving multi-layer and functionally graded coatings. A frictional circular punch is assumed to slide down the surface of the coating with a specified velocity. Formulation is based on wave equations of plane elasticity, and reduced to a singular integral equation by Galilean and Fourier transformations. Developed procedures are verified through comparisons to the findings available in the literature. Numerical results illustrate influences of factors such as dimensionless punch speed, coefficient of kinetic friction, property variation profile, and contact length-to-thickness ratio upon the contact stresses, and the required contact force.

Multi-layer model for moving contact problems of functionally graded coatings with general variations in physical properties
Toktaş, Selim Ercihan; Dağ, Serkan (2022-04-01)
This paper presents a multi-layer model for moving contact problems of functionally graded coatings whose physical properties have general spatial variations. The coating is assumed to be composed of an arbitrary number of layers and perfectly bonded to an elastic substrate. Wave equations for the layers and the substrate are derived in accordance with the plane theory of elastodynamics. The equations are solved by the application of Galilean and Fourier transformations. Flat and triangular punch profiles a...
Contact mechanics of graded materials: Analyses using singular integral equations
Dağ, Serkan (2006-10-18)
Contact stress distribution at an FGM surface is evaluated using an analytical technique based on the singular integral equations. An FGM half-plane is assumed to be in sliding contact with a rigid stamp of an arbitrary profile. The functionally graded medium is assumed to possess two-dimensional material property variations. Two independent nonhomogeneity constants are used to derive the governing partial differential equations. By using the integral transform techniques, all boundary conditions are satisf...
Bending and free vibrations of functionally graded annular and circular micro-plates under thermal loading
Eshraghi, Iman; Dağ, Serkan; Soltani, Nasser (2016-03-01)
We introduce solution methods capable of treating static bending and free vibration problems involving thermally loaded functionally graded annular and circular micro-plates. Formulation is based on modified couple stress theory; and related governing partial differential equations and boundary conditions are derived by means of Hamilton's principle. Displacement field is expressed in a unified way so as to produce numerical results in accordance with Kirchhoff, Mindlin, and third-order shear deformation th...
Sliding frictional contact between a rigid punch and a laterally graded elastic medium
Dağ, Serkan; Yidirim, Bora; Ozatag, A. Cihan (2009-11-01)
Analytical and computational methods are developed for contact mechanics analysis of functionally graded materials (FGMs) that possess elastic gradation in the lateral direction. In the analytical formulation, the problem of a laterally graded half-plane in sliding frictional contact with a rigid punch of an arbitrary profile is considered. The governing partial differential equations and the boundary conditions of the problem are satisfied through the use of Fourier transformation. The problem is then redu...
Subsurface stresses in graded coatings subjected to frictional contact with heat generation
BALCI, MEHMET NURULLAH; Dağ, Serkan; YILDIRIM, BORA (2017-01-01)
In this article, the thermoelastic contact problem involving a functionally graded coating and a homogenous substrate is considered. Determination of subsurface stresses is highly critical in the design of mechanical assemblages due to fatigue and fracture failures resulting from contact loading. In such con tact problems, cracking generally initiates at the locations of high subsurface stresses. The present study proposes a finite element methodology for the computation of subsurface stresses in functional...
