A series of experiments was conducted in a rectangular tilting flume with a smooth fixed (rigid) bed under uniform flow conditions. In each experiment, a thin fibreglass rectangular rod of height 1/5 or 1.5/5 of the height of the particle was placed just downstream of the particle to imitate the interaction of particles in rivers. Contrary to common belief and knowledge, it was found that the Shields parameter decreased as the dimensionless grain diameter increased for a given bed slope under rough turbulent flow conditions. Moreover, a larger shear stress was needed to start the motion of particles on steeper slopes for a given particle diameter. An increase in the ratio of the support height to particle height by 50% resulted in an increase in the dimensionless critical shear stress by almost six times for the same particle and relative roughness.

Effect of the downstream transition region of a flow measurement flume of rectangular compound cross section on flow properties
Göğüş, Mustafa; Atalay, Ahmet E. (2013-10-01)
In this study, the effect of the downstream expansion region of a flow measurement flume of rectangular compound cross section on some of the flow properties; such as the discharge coefficient, C-d, the approach velocity coefficient, C and the modular limit, ML were investigated. For this reason, extensive laboratory tests were conducted with nine models of different downstream transitions. The aforementioned hydraulic quantities were then related with the relevant parameters to obtain sets of curves from w...
Effect of coarse aggregate size on interfacial cracking under uniaxial compression
Akcaoglu, T; Tokyay, Mustafa; Celik, T (2002-12-01)
The effects of aggregate type and size are important parameters in the formation of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) structure and subsequently in the failure process of concrete. The influence of surface, rigidity and size of aggregates and water/cement (w/c) ratio of the matrix on bond strength at the ITZ and the interrelationship between the bond and the matrix in the failure process of concrete under uniaxial compression were studied. For this purpose a series of experiments were designed and carried o...
Effect of meteorology and transport on particle concentrations and size distribution in Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere
Uzunpınar, Elif Sena; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; İmamoğlu, İpek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2022-3-25)
This study aims to examine the relationship between particle sizes and processes in the atmosphere and the effect of dust transport on particle size distribution. Number (0.2 μm to 32 μm) and mass (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) concentrations were collected at rural (Mediterranean coast - Marmaris) and suburban (Central Anatolia - Ankara) stations between April 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018. The coarse particles were more dominant in the Ankara while the Marmaris contained relatively smaller-sized particles. The lo...
Effect of particle shape on fall velocity of angular particles
Göğüş, Mustafa; Kokpinar, MA (2001-10-01)
In this study, fall velocities of 174 regularly shaped angular particles-namely cylindrical, cubic, wedge-shaped prisms, and box-shaped prisms-made of five different materials were measured in calm water conditions in a cylindrical settling column. Reynolds numbers based on particle fall velocity and characteristic length were varied, in the range from 10(3) to 4.2 x 10(4). A new shape factor and characteristic length were defined from a transformed form of the original particle. Variation of experimentally...
Effect of surface roughness in microchannels on heat transfer
Turgay, Metin Bilgehan; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
In this study, effect of surface roughness on convective heat transfer and fluid flow in two dimensional parallel plate microchannels is analyzed by numerically. For this purpose, single-phase, developing, laminar fluid flow at steady state and in the slip flow regime is considered. The continuity, momentum, and energy equations for Newtonian fluids are solved numerically for constant wall temperature boundary condition. Slip velocity and temperature jump at wall boundaries are imposed to observe the rarefa...
