Materials experience as a foundation for materials and design education
Pedgley, Owaın Francıs; Karana, Elvin (2016-11-01)
An important body of research has developed in recent years, explaining ways in which product materials influence user experiences. A priority now is to ensure that the research findings are adopted within an educational context to deliver contemporary curricula for students studying the subject of materials and design. This paper reports on an international initiative to develop 'materials experience' as a formal subject of study, complementary to traditional technical and engineering approaches to materia...

Materials Innovation in Acoustic Guitars: Challenging the Tonal Superiority of Wood
Pedgley, Owaın Francıs (MIT Press - Journals, 2012-12-01)
The authors explore perceived sound properties of acoustic guitars built with foamed polycarbonate soundboards rather than spruce or cedar. The research seeks to establish the extent to which polymer acoustic guitars are an acoustically credible alternative to wood instruments. Data are generated through participation by members of the public (n = 320) in blind listening tests. Remarkably, participants are found unable to distinguish much beyond a 50% success rate whether sound originates from wood or polym...
Materials as temporally specific phenomena: Specialization and compromise in bioplastics production
Tönük Kruıthof, Damla (SAGE Publications, 2017-8-4)
This article concerns itself with the materials' - matter, substance - of material culture. More specifically, it explores the making of bioplastics, by taking account of bioplastics' relationships with the products into which they are made. The author focuses on the processes of bioplastics' industrial production and manufacturing into bioplastic products, in and through which bioplastics come to be as they are in our daily lives, and as places where material-product relationships are formed. Her analysis ...
Materials-inspired Innovation for Acoustic Guitar Design
Pedgley, Owain; Norman , Eddie; Armstrong, Rob (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2009)
This paper presents a case study of research leading to a significant innovation in the acoustic guitar sector (1). The acoustic guitar is a result of centuries of design and development with wood, and has evolved into an archetypal and traditional product with a relatively conservative user base. As with many other product sectors, most acoustic guitars are now mass-produced in China, where low labour costs contribute to an average out-of-factory price of just $20 USD. This paper describes research into a ...
