In this study, I aim to investigate the interpretation and processing of anaphors under ellipsis. In particular, I am interested in the role of Vehicle Change (VC) in anaphora resolution in two elliptical constructions: Verb Phrase Ellipsis (VPE) and Right Node Raising (RNR) in L1 Turkish and L1 and L2 English. VC is a semantic process that allows non-pronominals to be interpreted as pronominals under ellipsis. I examined whether sentences whose interpretation requires VC are processed with more difficulties than those in which VC is not required, with the aim of determining whether VC is computationally demanding. To see a possible effect of VC in anaphora interpretation and in linguistic processing, I focus on the interpretation and on the on-line processing of ambiguous VPE and RNR sentences where the elided portion contains either a reflexive or a possessive anaphor. I also investigate how gender (mis)match between the antecedent and the anaphor, the directionality of anaphora, and the head directionality parameter of the language (head-initial versus head-final) affect the anaphora interpretation under ellipsis. I relied on offline semantic interpretation tasks and online self-paced reading experiment. The results revealed that the interpretations that required VC were dispreferred, suggesting that they are difficult and computationally costly. I found no effect of gender (mis)match on the interpretation of the anaphors. Lastly, there were mixed results regarding the effect of the directionality of anaphora and of the head directionality of a language on the interpretation.

Health promoting behaviors and exercise stages of change levels of university students at transition to university
Ebem, Zeynep; İnce, Mustafa Levent; Department of Physical Education and Sports (2007)
The purposes of this study were to examine (a) health promoting behaviors, (b) physical activity levels, (c) exercise stages of change levels, and (d) exercise preferences of students who had just entered the university by gender and residence. Participants were 438 students from Middle East Technical University (METU) English Preparatory school. Adolescent Health Promotion Scale (AHPS), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Physical Activity Stages of Change Questionnaire (PASCQ), and Physi...
Comprehension of Turkish relative clauses in Broca's aphasics and children
Kükürt, Duygu; Tekman, Hasan Gürkan; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2004)
The aim of this thesis is to test two hypotheses. The first one is about the nature of comprehension impairment in Broca's aphasia, namely the Trace Deletion Hypothesis (TDH), and the other is about the similarity between child and aphasic language, namely the Regression Hypothesis. According to TDH, agrammatic patients are impaired in comprehension of certain structures that are formed by movement transformation whereas they show normal comprehension in canonical structures. TDH proposes that patients use ...
Variation in time-to-compliance for pump-and-treat remediation of mass transfer-limited aquifers with hydraulic conductivity heterogeneity
Gungor-Demirci, Gamze; Aksoy, Ayşegül (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-07-01)
In this study, the impact of correlation length (lambda) of hydraulic conductivity (K) heterogeneity on pump-and-treat (P&T) remediation period (time-to-compliance) for a mass transfer-limited aquifer is evaluated. Additionally, impacts of variance (sigma (2)), different distributions of high and low K zones and different initial contaminant masses are explored. Two different P&T policies including different number of wells pumping at different rates are employed for the investigation. Simulation-optimizati...
Customer incivility and turnover intention of bank employees: the moderating role of perceived organizational support and big 5 personality traits
Başer Hüner, Burcu; Acar, F. Pınar.; Department of Business Administration (2019)
The purpose of this study is three-fold: (a) to reveal the relationship between customer incivility and turnover intention in Turkish banking sector, (b) to test mediating role of emotional exhaustion on that relation and (c) to examine the moderating roles of organisational support and big five personality traits on the relationship between customer incivility and bank employees’ emotional exhaustion level. To test the relationships among the variables presented, data were acquired from employees at both p...
Physical activity and exercise stages of change levels ofMiddle East Technical University students
Cengiz, Cevdet; İnce, Mustafa Levent; Department of Physical Education and Sports (2007)
The purposes of this study were to examine (a) physical activity participation levels, (b) exercise stages of change levels and (c) physical activity preferences of the Middle East Technical University undergraduate students with respect to gender, residence and faculty. Participants were 953 students from 5 different faculties (496 male, and 547 female). For the data collection, International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Physical Activity Stages of Change Questionnaire, and Physical Activity Pre...
