Civil aviation is defined as all aviation activities carried out for non-military purposes, such as private, sporting, or commercial. This sector has proliferated since the late 1940s globally (Addepalli et al., 2018). However, this rapid growth causes environmental degradation and brings sustainable aviation practices into the national green transition agendas ( Planès et al, 2021). This paper examines the concept of sustainability in civil aviation by (i) describing the historical background of international civil aviation (in the world and in Turkiye) ii) reviewing the literature on sustainability in civil aviation (emphasis on international aviation organizations designing sustainable aviation policies, i.e. ICAO) iii) elaborating the case of Air France-KLM as a best practice example (Air France-KLM, 2022). This paper evaluates the relevant breakthroughs of the global civil aviation industry, the goals of international authorities, and Turkiye's approach to providing suggestions for harmonizing the Turkish civil aviation industry with the globe. In the literature, it is seen that solutions to sustainability problems are mostly sought by referring to technological developments. This study states that; integrative approaches by the sectoral and policy actors need to be produced to achieve effective results in sustainable aviation. For this purpose, we made a comprehensive literature review and content analysis of the relevant documents and reports to have a snapshot of sustainable aviation practices by analyzing the related international and national policy documents for sustainable aviation such as BM ICAO CORSIA and EU Green Deal ( EC, 2022). Then, Air France KLM Example is elaborated to derive the lessons learned for improving the sustainable aviation practices in Turkiye.

Evaluation of visual cues of three dimensional virtual environments for helicopter simulators
Çetin, Yasemin; Çetin, Yasemin; Department of Information Systems (2008)
Flight simulators are widely used by the military, civil and commercial aviation. Visual cues are an essential part of helicopter flight. The required cues for hover are especially large due to closeness to the ground and small movements. In this thesis, density and height parameters of the 3D (Three Dimensional) objects in the scene are analyzed to find their effect on hovering and low altitude flight. An experiment is conducted using a PC-based flight simulator with three LCD monitors and flight control s...
Mathematical model and autopilot design of a twin engine jet plane
Atak, Hazal Cansu; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2020)
Fighter aircrafts have very important place in military and aerospace industry. Lots of types of these aircrafts are used according to their primary missions like providing fire power from high above the ground and support for ground forces. Selecting the number of engines and their type are dependent to these missions. Turbojet, turbo prop and ramjet engines are most preferred types for these applications, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Turbojet engines have high performance as a means ...
Improvement of routing protocols for unmanned flying ad hoc networks (UFANETS) by using crosslayer metrics
Alkış, Oğuz; Ulusoy, İlkay; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) have been used to perform different type of missions. Many of these civilian and military missions require information exchange between UAVs, which is performed by using routing protocols for wireless ad hoc networks. An efficient routing protocol for unmanned flying ad hoc networks (UFANETs) plays a critical role for data transmission during various applications. In the literature, there are many studies for mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) routing protocols. Due to high mobility ...
Design and evaluation of a helicopter main rotor electrohydraulic control system
Düzağaç, Hasan Ali; Çalışkan, Hakan; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2022-8-26)
Helicopters are widely used aircrafts for several purposes. Main Rotor of a Helicopter creates necessary flight forces for performing flight operation. Orientation of a Helicopter Rotor System is determined and controlled manually by pilot and automatically by automatic control system via hydraulically operated flight control actuators. In this research, a novel electrohydraulically operated helicopter main rotor control system is mathematically designed and developed to improve overall performance of contr...
