© 2022 Chinese Society of Aeronautics and AstronauticsThe effects of thickness-to-chord (t/c) ratio, anhedral angle (δ), and cropping ratio from trailing-edge (Cr%) on the aerodynamics of non-slender reverse delta wings in comparison to non-slender delta wings with sweep angle of 45 degree were characterized in a low-speed wind tunnel using force and pressure measurements. The measurements were conducted for total of 8 different delta and reverse delta wings. Two different t/c ratios of 5.9% and 1.1%, and two different anhedral angles of δ = 15 and 30 degrees for non-cropped and cropped at Cr = 30% conditions were tested. The results indicate that the reverse delta wings generate higher lift-to-drag ratio and have better longitudinal static stability characteristics compared to the delta wings. The wing thickness has favorable effect on longitudinal static stability for the reverse delta wing whereas longitudinal static stability is not influenced by wing thickness for the delta wing. For reverse delta wings, the anhedraled wing without cropping has adverse effect on aerodynamic performance and decreases the lift-to-drag ratio. Cropping in anhedraled wing causes significant improvement in lift-to-drag ratio, shift in aerodynamic and pressure centers towards the trailing-edge, and enhancement in longitudinal static stability.

Computation of Vortical Flow Fields over a Close-Coupled Delta Canard-Wing Configuration and Adjoint Based Configuration Optimization
Tikenoğulları, Alp; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2022-2-10)
This study aims at investigating the vortical flow field over a close-coupled delta canard-wing configuration to understand the vortex interactions and the mechanism of lift enhancement provided by the canard, especially at high angles of attack, and employing an adjoint-based configuration optimization to achieve further enhancements in aerodynamic forces. An open-source CFD solver, SU2 is employed for both flow field computations and adjoint-based configuration optimizations. First, flow solutions with SU...
Aerodynamic shape optimization of a wing using 3d flow solutions with su2 and response surface methodology
Yıldırım, Berkay Yasin; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2021-4)
In this study, the aerodynamic shape optimization of a wing is performed by using 3D flow solutions together with response surface methodology. The purpose of this study is to optimize the aerodynamic shape of a wing to achieve the lowest possible drag coefficient while ensuring desired maneuvering capability and lateral stability. Aerodynamic shape optimization is performed for a wing of a turboprop trainer aircraft. Optimization objective and constraints are determined according to mission requirements an...

In this paper, the aerodynamic properties of a selected aircraft geometry are calculated in supersonic flow condition using PANAIR. PANAIR is an open-source high-order panel method solver for irrotational and inviscid flows and it is more efficient than higher fidelity CFD analyses for the preliminary design process since it is faster and easier to use. A batch of supersonic analyses is completed for different wing/body configurations for the selected aircraft geometry and with various panel g...
Transformation of flow structure on a delta wing of moderate sweep angle during pitch-up maneuver
Yavuz, Mehmet Metin (2012-08-01)
The transformation of flow structure on a delta wing of moderate sweep angle is investigated during pitch-up via quantitative imaging in crossflow planes, in relation to qualitative dye visualization. The comparisons are made with the corresponding stationary wing. The effects of different pitch-up maneuver rates and Reynolds numbers on evolution of flow patterns are also addressed. A technique of high-image-density particle image velocimetry is employed for the quantitative analysis. The transformation of ...
Flow Structure on Nonslender Delta Wing: Reynolds Number Dependence and Flow Control
Zharfa, Mohammadreza; Ozturk, Ilhan; Yavuz, Mehmet Metin (2016-03-01)
The flow structure over a 35 deg swept delta wing is characterized in a low-speed wind tunnel using techniques of laser-illuminated smoke visualization, laser Doppler anemometry, and surface-pressure measurements. The effects of Reynolds numbers and attack angles on the evaluation of flow patterns are addressed within the broad range of Reynolds number 10(4) < Re < 10(5) and attack angle 3 deg < alpha < 10 deg. In addition, the effect of steady blowing through the leading edges of the wing on flow structure...
