After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russian Federation struggled to keep its economy, society and military together, not to mention its borders throughout the 1990s. The bad shape of economy and rapidly decomposing capabilities of the armed forces weakened strategic posture and deterrent capability of Russia. Starting from early 2000s, Russia showed signs of recovery in economy, which in turn helped maintenance and upgrade of the armed forces. It was in this period that Russia showed more cooperation approach towards West, establishing and keeping strategic dialogue channels, collaboration and partnership on several regional and global issues. Black Sea was, therefore, relatively calm in terms of geopolitical competition. However, starting from late 2000s things rapidly started to change. With more resources allocated for military modernization, Russia resumed its claims, aims and activities in the Black Sea region. 2008 war with Georgia was a turning point for military modernization while the Arab Spring and civil wars in Libya and Syria were alarm bells for Moscow. It was after these events that Russia started to be more assertive and it is the crisis in Ukraine in 2014 that represents the milestone for Black Sea region competition. Russias military modernization programs and doctrinal transformation manifests itself in the modernization of the Black Sea fleet and its activities. This thesis aims to provide a general overview of this transformation and its meaning for the security of the region.

Song, Keunwon; Özdemir, Yonca; Political Science and International Relations (2014-6)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia endured turbulent years of political and economic transformation. At the time, heated debates were focused on speed of reforms between the shock therapists and gradualists. Under President Yeltsin, Russia hastened its economic reforms through the Shock Therapy – radical structural adjustment policies that transformed Latin American countries few decades earlier and Poland just a couple years earlier. The general sentiment has been that the Shock Therapy in ...

Toktogulov, Beishenbek; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of International Relations (2015)
The objective of this thesis is to explain the changes in Russia’s policy towards NATO after the creation of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) in 2002. It argues that contrary to the liberal view which assumes that the NRC presents an example of international cooperation through institutions, the NRC has been functioning in accordance with power politics or concerns of Russia and the security priorities of NATO. Russian military action in Georgia and its military intervention in Ukraine followed by its annexati...

The main aim of Russian monetary authorities has been to restore economic and financial stability of the country. The major obstacles in achieving stable economy have been fluctuations in exchange rate and high inflation rates. The aim of this study is to analyze the main factors those influence inflation in Russ...
Russia and the Kosovo conflict: 1998-2008
Sulejmanovic, Selma; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of Eurasian Studies (2008)
This thesis aims to study Russian foreign policy towards Kosovo during the period between 1998 and 2008 in light of the school of thought that claims that Russia's foreign policy toward Kosovo resembles the Cold War confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. This thesis argues that Russia’s role in the Kosovo war and its aftermath is motivated by Russia’s interest in being seen as a great power in international system rather than using Kosovo in order to confront the United States. Beside...
