Age Control Protocol (ACP) and its enhanced version, ACP+, are recently proposed transport layer protocols to control Age of Information of data flows. This study presents an experimental evaluation of ACP and ACP+ on the ESP32 microcontroller, a currently popular IoT device. We identify several issues related to the implementation of these protocols on this platform and in general on short-haul, low-delay connections. We propose solutions to overcome these issues in the form of simple modifications to ACP+, and compare the performance of the resulting modified ACP+ with that of the original protocols on a small-delay local wireless IoT connection.

Measuring age of information on real-life connections
Beytur, Hasan Burhan; Baghaee, Sajjad; Uysal, Elif (2019-04-01)
Age of Information (AoI) is a relatively new metric to measure freshness of networked application such as real-time monitoring of status updates or control. The AoI metric is discussed in the literature mainly in a theoretical way. In this work, we want to point out the issues related to the measuring AoI-related values, such as synchronization and calculation of the values. We discussed the effect of synchronization error in the measurement and a solution for calculating an estimate of average AoI without ...
Optimizing age of information on real-life TCP/IP connections through reinforcement learning
Sert, Egemen; Sonmez, Canberk; Baghaee, Sajjad; Uysal, Elif (2018-07-05)
Age of Information (AoI) has emerged as a performance metric capturing the freshness of data for status-update based applications ( e.g. , remote monitoring) as a more suitable alternative to classical network performance indicators such as throughput or delay. Optimizing AoI often requires distinctly novel and sometimes counter-intuitive networking policies that adapt the rate of update transmissions to the randomness in network resources. However, almost all previous work on AoI to data has been theoretic...
Implementation and Evaluation of Age-Aware Downlink Scheduling Policies in Push-Based and Pull-Based Communication
Oğuz, Tahir Kerem; Ceran Arslan, Elif Tuğçe; Uysal, Elif; Girici, Tolga (2022-5-01)
As communication systems evolve to better cater to the needs of machine-type applications such as remote monitoring and networked control, advanced perspectives are required for the design of link layer protocols. The age of information (AoI) metric has firmly taken its place in the literature as a metric and tool to measure and control the data freshness demands of various applications. AoI measures the timeliness of transferred information from the point of view of the destination. In this study, we exper...
Experimental Analysis and FPGA Implementation of the Real Valued Time Delay Neural Network Based Digital Predistortion
Yesil, Soner; Sen, Cansu; Yılmaz, Ali Özgür (2019-01-01)
This paper presents an FPGA implementation of the Real Valued Time Delay Neural Network (RVTDNN) based digital predistortion with a very low resource utilization and high throughput. The implementation exploits efficient utilization of FPGA primitives and approximation of activation functions that can be realized with simple logic operations. The proposed modifications and constraints on the algorithms have been decided and verified based on a closed-loop adaptive hardware setup including RFHIC RWP03040-1H ...
A performance study on real-time IP multicasting
Demirci, T; Bilgen, Semih (2003-07-03)
In this paper we investigate the performance of Internet Group Management Protocol version 3 (IGMPv3) and Real Time Transport Protocol (RTP) for various scenarios. For this purpose, a network simulator is developed using C++. As it is important to evaluate protocol performances under realistic conditions, the simulation models and network traffic models that are used in the simulations are developed to reflect real life behavior. The simulation models are verified and the performance results obtained are co...
