© International Association for Statistical Education (IASE/ISI), November, 2017.This study considers probability models as tools for both making informal statistical inferences and building stronger conceptual connections between data and chance topics in teaching statistics. In this paper, we aim to explore pre-service mathematics teachers' use of probability models for a chance game, where the sum of two dice matters in winning the game. We report on an interview with a group of three pre-service teachers as they engaged in predicting and conducting experiments and computer simulations as an attempt to develop a winning strategy. This paper focuses on how the participants came to use the theoretical model of the sum of two dice as they tried to coordinate the combinatorial analysis and the use of data as evidence in their predictions.

Pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ ways of thinking about rate of change in the context of a modeling activity
Kertil, Mahmut; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Çetinkaya, Bülent (2017-01-01)
As a part of a larger study aiming at developing pre-service teachers’ pedagogical knowledge about mathematical modeling, this study investigates pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ ways of thinking regarding rate of change in the context of a modeling task on population growth. The participants of the study were 9 prospective middle school mathematics teachers in their senior year attending a public university. The study was conducted as a part of an undergraduate course on mathematical modeling f...

Pre-service Teachers' Developing Conceptions about the Nature and Pedagogy of Mathematical Modeling in the Context of a Mathematical Modeling Course
Çetinkaya, Bülent; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Alacacı, Cengiz; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (2016-01-01)
Adopting a multitiered design-based research perspective, this study examines pre-service secondary mathematics teachers' developing conceptions about (a) the nature of mathematical modeling in simulations of real life problem solving, and (b) pedagogical principles and strategies needed to teach mathematics through modeling. Unlike other studies that have focused on single-topic and lesson-sized research sites, a course-sized research site was used in this study. Having been through several iterations over...
Sixth grade students' emerging practices of data modelling
Kazak, Sibel; Pratt, Dave; Gokce, Rukiye (2018-12-01)
We explore 11-12-year-old students' emerging ideas of models and modelling as they engage in a data-modelling task involving inquiry based on data obtained from an experiment. We report on a design-based study in which students identified what and how to measure, decided how to structure and represent data, and made inferences and predictions based on data. Our focus was on the following: (1) the nature of the student-generated models and (2) how students evaluated the models. Data from written work generat...
Pre-service science teachers‘ self-efficacy in relation to personality traits and academic self-regulation
Şenler, Burcu; Sungur, Semra; Department of Elementary Education (2011)
The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among pre-service science teachers’ personality, self-regulation, and teaching self-efficacy by proposing and testing a comprehensive conceptual model. In the model, it was hypothesized that personality traits are directly linked to pre-service science teachers’ self-efficacy and academic self-regulation, and pre-service science teachers’ academic self-regulation is directly related to their self-efficacy. A total of 1794 pre-service science teachers (8...
