Nature of science (NOS) understanding was seen as an important component for scientificliteracy (Lederman, 2007). The purpose of the study is to investigate eighth grade students’ NOSunderstanding about three tenets of NOS tentativeness, empirical-based and subjectivity. The sampleconsisted of 414 eighth grade students from four different public middle schools. The data werecollected in the fall semester of 2019-2020 academic year. To collect data, the Views of Nature ofScience Elementary Level (VNOS-E) Questionnaire was used. To analyze students’ NOS understanding, the researchers used the rubric formed based on the rubric developed and used in the study of Akersonand Donnelly (2010). Based on this rubric, the researchers classified the participants’ views asinadequate, adequate, or informed for each NOS tenet. Then, inadequate views scored as 1, adequateviews scored as 2, and informed views scored as 3. The findings of descriptive statistics revealed thatstudents held adequate understanding mostly about tentativeness (M=1.59, SD=0.52). Then, respectively, they held adequate understanding about empirical-based (M=1.46, SD=0.55) andsubjectivity (M=1.30, SD=0.50). About 43% of the students held inadequate, about 56% of them heldadequate and only about 1% of them held informed understanding on tentativeness tenet. About 57%of the students held inadequate, about 40% of them held adequate and about 3% of them heldinformed understanding on empirical-based tenet. About 72% of the students had inadequate, about27% of them had adequate and only about 1% of them had informed understanding about subjectivitytenet. The findings showed that almost half or more than half of the students have inadequate NOSunderstanding on these three tenets. Based on the findings, suggestions were made to improvestudents’ NOS understanding.

Ninth grade students understanding of the nature of scientific knowledge
Kılıç, Kerem; Sungur, Semra; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Tekkaya, Ceren (2005-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the 9th-grade students’ understandings of the nature of scientific knowledge. The study also aimed to investigate the differences in students’ understanding of the nature of scientific knowledge by gender, and school types. A total of 575 ninth grade students from four different school types (General High, Anatolian High, Vocational High and Super Lycee) participated in the study. Data were collected utilizing an adapted version of the Nature of Scientific Knowle...
Exploring representation of nature of science aspects in 9th grade chemistry textbooks
Esmer, Feyza; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2011)
The aim of this study was to examine the representation of Nature of Science (NOS) aspects in 9th grade chemistry textbooks. Two textbooks nation-wide used are analyzed, one of them is written in Turkish the other in English. These textbooks were written according to 2008-2009 education program’s curriculum. A qualitative oriented approach was employed and ethnographic content analysis was used as the methodological framework for this research as Irez (2006) has performed. Data were analyzed by means of boo...
Exploring representation of nature of science aspects in science textbooks
Yamak, Yeliz; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The aim of this study was to examine middle school science textbooks according to some criteria in terms of nature of science (NOS). A total of three middle school science textbooks in 6th, 7th and 8th grade and two biology units were analyzed in each textbook. In the 6th grade science textbooks, “Reproduction, Development and Growth in Living Beings”and “Systems in Our Body” units, in the 7th grade science textbook, “Systems in Our Body” and “Human and Environment” units, in the 8th grade science textbook,...
7th Grade Students’ Mathematical Difficulties in Force and Motion Unit
Cebesoy, Ümran Betül; Yeniterzi, Betül (Turkish Journal of Education, 2016-3-31)
Integration of science and mathematics as well as with other disciplines is overarching goal of science education. In spite of its importance, teachers have concerns about mathematical difficulties that their students encounter during their teaching. One of the most common subjects that students have mathematical difficulties was reported as physics. With this regard, the present study is aimed to investigate seventh grade students' mathematical errors in a physics related subject, specifically force and mo...
Novice and experienced science teachers’ conceptual knowledge of evolutionary theory within the context of micro-and macroevolution
Yesilyurt, Ezgi; Öztekin, Ceren; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Deniz, Hasan (Informa UK Limited, 2019-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to explore science teachers' conceptions about micro-and macro-evolutionary processes. In this study, a case study was employed to compare and contrast novice and experienced middle school science teachers' evolution conceptions. The data were collected using four micro-and macro-evolutionary scenarios alongside cognitive interviews. The findings illustrated that while the novice teacher mostly provided non-Darwinian explanations, the experienced teacher predominantly applied k...
