Latest trends in seismic protection

2020-01-01
© 2021 Taylor & Francis Group, London.Seismic protection devices have been used in many new and existing buildings as well as bridges all over the world for the last couple of decades. Latest trends in seismic protection have been focused more on the development of new devices which can provide easy solutions for installation and maintenance while providing the needed energy dissipation during the seismic event. This paper focuses on some new designs of seismic protection for bridges, research of new devices and performance observation of seismic protection devices in a hospital building during a recent earthquake. In this scope, case studies have been presented in this paper.

Seismic retrofit of buildings with backbone dampers
Shaban, Nefize; Ozdemir, Seda; Caner, Alp; Akyüz, Uğurhan (2017-01-01)
Dampers have been effectively used in new designs and seismic retrofit of old structures in many parts of the world. The common seismic retrofit practice in Turkey is almost purely based on stiffening the structure with additional shear walls or adding braces to limit the excessive seismic drifts. Such an approach usually results in expensive interior works and enlargements of foundations. The stiffening of the structure typically results in attracting more seismic force. Utilization of dampers as seismic p...
Seismic Isolation of Highway Bridges
Buckle, Ian; Constantinou, Michael; Dicleli, Murat; Ghasemi, Hamid (Multidisciplinary Center For Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER), 2006-08-01)
More than 200 bridges have been designed or retrofitted in the United States using seismic isolation in the last 20 years, and more than a thousand bridges around the world now use this cost-effective technique for seismic protection. Intended to supplement AASHTO’s Guide Specifications for Seismic Isolation Design (1999), this manual presents the principles of isolation for bridges, develops step-by-step methods of analysis, explains material and design issues for elastomeric and sliding isolators, and g...
Numerical comparison of retaining system behavior for a deep excavation case with and without ground improvement
Maghsoudloo, Arash; Ahmadinaghadeh, Reza; Toker, Nabi Kartal (2012-11-02)
In the construction of deep excavations in urban areas, the safety of adjacent ground and structures becomes major concern for engineers. In soft clays, the main reason for occurrence of large deflections of soil support systems in excavations is instability of the excavation base. This paper will focus on analyzing and comparing design of an excavation with and without jet grout improvement applied to the excavation base by employing the finite-element code PLAXIS. A well-documented case study is analyzed,...
Development of an IT-based tool for portfolio assessment and management for construction companies
Bilgin, Gözde; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Özorhon Orakçal, Beliz; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Development in the construction industry has leaded most of the construction companies to undertake more complex projects than before, which are generally executed concurrently. Therefore, project management routines of the companies may not support effective management of multi-projects. Project portfolio management approach has been suggested to meet requirements for coordinating multi-projects to meet strategic objectives under limited resources. Since project portfolio management requires a comprehensiv...
