Currently used rockets and missile igniter systems are mostly based on the pyrotechnic blends of fuels and oxidizers. In this study nano-sized boron was used as fuel because of its high heat of combustion, low atomic weight and high energy density. Iron oxide was used as an oxidizer and synthesized by sol-gel method by using various types of proton scavengers. In the experiments Fe(NO3)3·9H2O was used as a precursor and a wide range of proton scavengers (propylene oxide, 1,2 epoxybutane, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydropyran, 1,4 dioxane, ammonium hydroxide and pyridine) were used to start the gelation mechanisms. The thermite mixtures were prepared by mixing nanostructured Fe2O3 xerogel samples with nano-sized boron powders. The energetic properties of boron-Fe2O3 composites were determined and the effect of proton scavengers on the textural properties and calorific value of the thermite mixtures were examined. The effect of proton scavenger on the performance and energetic properties of the samples were evaluated according to their combustion characteristics. The results showed that the surface area of xerogels is strongly dependent on the type of proton scavenger used. The heat output values of the boron/iron oxide nano thermites were determined between 1890 to 6550 J/g depending on the fuel-oxidant ratio. It was shown that both the type of proton scavenger and fuel-oxidant ratio could be used to modify the combustion performance and the structural properties of nanothermites.

Effect of synthesis parameters on structural properties and thermal behavior of Sol-Gel synthesized iron oxide Xerogels
Dinçer Yılmaz, Nil Ezgi; Karakaş, Gürkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2018)
Currently used igniter system compositions are mostly based on the pyrotechnic blends of fuels and oxidizers. In this study, nanostructured metallic xerogels were synthesized by sol-gel method by using various types of proton scavengers and these metallic xerogels were used as oxidizers. In the experiments, Fe(NO3)3·9H2O was used as a precursor and a wide range of proton scavengers (propylene oxide, 1,2 epoxybutane, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydropyran, 1,4 dioxane and ammonium hydroxide ) were used to start th...
The effects of Cr addition on the atomic ordering properties of Ni based superalloys
Eriş, Rasim; Mehrabov, Amdulla; Akdeniz, Mahmut Vedat (null; 2016-10-01)
Nickel-based superalloys are used in turbine blades, nuclear reactors and power plants due to their excellent mechanical properties and oxidation-corrosion resistance at high temperatures. The superior properties of Nickelbased superalloys are further improved by alloying element additions which lead to formation of coherently GLVWULEXWHG RUGHUHG Ȗ¶ SUHFLSLWDWHV 1L3$O ZLWKLQ Ȗ 1L matrix. Enhancement of mechanical properties has been attributed to Al-sublattice site occupancy of tertiary DOOR\LQJHOHPHQWV...
Effect of self-ion irradiation on the microstructural changes of alloy EK-181 in annealed and severely deformed conditions
Aydoğan Güngör, Eda; Gigax, J. G.; Chen, D.; Wang, X.; Dzhumaev, P. S.; Emelyanova, O. V.; Ganchenkova, M. G.; Kalin, B. A.; Leontiva-Smirnova, M.; Valiev, R. Z.; Enikeev, N. A.; Abramova, M. M.; Wu, Y.; Lo, W. V.; Yang, Y.; Short, M.; Maloy, S. A.; Garner, F. A.; Shao, L. (Elsevier BV, 2017-04-01)
EK-181 is a low-activation ferriticimartensitic steel that is an attractive candidate for in-core component materials for both fast reactors and fusion reactors. To assess the effect of microstructural engineering on radiation response, two variants of EK-181 were studied: one in an annealed condition and the other subject to severe plastic deformation. These specimens were irradiated with 3.5 MeV Fe self-ions up to 400 peak displacements per atom (dpa) at temperatures ranging from 400 degrees C to 500 degr...
Effect of liner material and explosive type on penetration effectiveness of shaped charge
Zaki, S.; Uddin, Emad; Rashid, B.; Mubashar, A.; Shah, Samiur R. (2019-07-01)
Shaped charges are used in many civilian and military applications. This study focuses on the effects of liner material and the type of explosive on the development of shaped charge jet. This was carried out by experimentation and numerical finite element-based modelling. Shaped charges were tested on a steel plate during the experimentation and the experimental data were used to validate the developed numerical model of the shaped charge. A hydrocode-based finite element model was able to predict the perfo...
Effect of proton irradiation on the performance of fluxgate sensors
İÇİN, KÜRŞAT; Can, H.; Akyol, S.; Uslu Kiçeci, P.; Topal, U.; ÖZTÜRK, SEDA; Demirköz, Melahat Bilge; Sözeri, H. (2023-04-25)
The fluxgate magnetometers have been used in many space missions due to their stability, low cost, low mass, and good measuring sensitivity and range. Space weather conditions around the Earth and solar system may be dangerous for the sensors of these crucially important devices. Proton irradiation was used to simulate space weather conditions near the Earth's magnetosphere in Van Allen belts. The effect of proton irradiation on the structural, magnetic, and sensor performance of our fluxgate sensors was st...
