© ASCE.Sediment transported along with extreme flooding may greatly affect flood conveyance and associated operations and management in the lower cache creek system. In this study, the relative sediment capture and transport in lower cache creek, under current bathymetric conditions and one modification alternative (2A), is evaluated. Sediment dynamics in the lower cache creek system, which includes a floodplain and settling basin, are evaluated under extreme flow events. Of particular interest is the sediment trap efficiency of the cache creek settling basin (CCSB) under different flood scenarios. The CCSB was designed as a retention basin to capture sediment and reduce sediment loading into the Yolo Bypass, therefore preserving flood conveyance of the bypass. Sediment dynamics for each flow event, under both the current condition and 2A, are simulated with the CCHE2D model, a two-dimensional depth-averaged flow and sediment transport model. The simulations allow relative comparison of the sediment trapping performance of the current condition and 2A. Preliminary simulation results are presented here.

Two-dimensional unsteady flow modeling of flood inundation in a leveed basin
Carr, K.J.; Tu, T.; Ercan, Ali; Kavvas, M.L.; Nosacka, J. (2015-01-01)
© 2015 ASCE.The Cache Creek Settling Basin (CCSB) is a 14.5 square-kilometer sediment retention basin designed to trap sediment and reduce sediment loads into the Yolo Bypass. The basin, and the 13-kilometer stretch of leveed creek from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Cache Creek at Yolo gauge (11452500) to the upstream boundary of the basin, were engineered to safely conduct flows up to 850 cubic meters per second with approximately 1-meter of freeboard. The sole purpose of the basin is to retai...
Two-dimensional sediment transport modeling in Cache Creek Settling Basin, California
Tu, Tongbi; Carr, Kara J.; Ercan, Ali; Kavvas, M. Levent; Nosacka, John (2015-01-01)
© 2015 ASCE.The Cache Creek Settling Basin (CCSB) is subject to inflows with high sediment concentration. Originally designed to protect the floodway capacity in the Yolo Bypass, current performance of the CCSB is in question following over 70 years of high sediment loads. Operation plans dictate that alterations be made to the levees and/or overflow weir in the basin when trap efficiencies are less than 30 percent. CCHE2D model, a 2D depth-averaged hydrodynamics and sediment transport model, is applied to ...
A study on dam instrumentation retrofitting
Yanmaz, Ali Melih; ARI, Onur (2011-02-01)
Continuous monitoring and inspection of large dams would provide means for proper rehabilitative actions to be taken on time which intend to maintain the desired safety throughout the physical life of dams. Comprehensive inspections can be carried out using a number of instruments. An ideal dam instrumentation system should provide time-dependent information about critical parameters so that possible future behaviour of the structure can be predicted. Numerous of the existing dams do not have adequate instr...
An analysis of deformation behaviorof Muratlı asphalt faced rockfill dam
Ünsever, Yeşim Sema; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
In this study, settlement and seepage behavior of Muratlı Dam, which is the first asphalt faced rockfill dam in Turkey, is investigated for the “end of construction” and “reservoir impoundment” loading conditions. Two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to determine the total stresses, displacements and pore water pressures. Hardening soil model is used in order to represent the non-linear, inelastic and stress dependent behavior of rockfill material. Material model par...
A Study on flood management practices for Güzelyurt
Şahin, Erdal; Yanmaz, A Melih; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
This study deals with the investigation of characteristics of a flash flood and development of design of flood mitigation facilities occurred in Güzelyurt in North Cyprus on 18th of January, 2010 and development of design of flood mitigation facilities. Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling of this flood event has been utilized to develop solutions for preventing the region from the flood. Topographical maps and soil properties are used in hydrological modeling. The data are inserted into a geographical informa...
