In this study, settlement and seepage behavior of Muratlı Dam, which is the first asphalt faced rockfill dam in Turkey, is investigated for the “end of construction” and “reservoir impoundment” loading conditions. Two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to determine the total stresses, displacements and pore water pressures. Hardening soil model is used in order to represent the non-linear, inelastic and stress dependent behavior of rockfill material. Material model parameters are selected mainly referring to the previous studies on the dams consisting of similar materials and then back analyses are done to find the best fit. Calculated stresses, displacements and pore water pressures are compared with the observed values for both end of construction and reservoir filling conditions.

Investigation of the safe and sustainable yields for the Sandy Complex aquifer system in Ergene River Basin
Ökten, Şebnem; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
This study aims to determine the safe and sustainable development and management of groundwater resources in Ergene River Basin located in northwestern Turkey. A numerical groundwater model was developed for the Sandy Complex aquifer, which is the most productive and the most widespread aquifer in the basin. The finite difference model with 5900 cells was used to represent the steady and unsteady flow in the aquifer. The model was calibrated in two steps: a steady state calibration by using the observed gro...
An evaluation of Surgu Dam response during 5 May 1986 earthquake
Ozkan, MY; Erdik, M; Tuncer, MA; Yilmaz, C (Elsevier BV, 1996-01-01)
Surgu Dam, located in southeast Turkey was subjected to longitudinal cracks on the dam crest and simultaneous settlement on the upstream part of the day, during 5 May 1986 Malatya Earthquake. In the following, a brief account of the 5 May 1986 earthquake and the damage occurred in the dam is reviewed, and the results of a dynamic finite element analysis incorporating the non-linear soil properties are presented. It is observed that, a Newmark type permanent displacement analysis carried out under simulated ...
An assessment of the dynamic properties of Adapazarı soils by cyclic direct simple shear tests
Kaven, Hassan Zehtab; Yılmaz, Mustafa Tolga; Department of Engineering Sciences (2010)
Among the hard-hit cities during 17 August 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake (Mw 7.4), Adapazarı is known for the prominent role of site conditions in damage distribution. Since the strong ground motion during the event was recorded only on a rock site, it is necessary to estimate the response of alluvium basin before any study on the relationship between the damage and the parameters of ground motion. Therefore, a series of site and laboratory tests were done on Adapazarı soils in order to decrease the uncertainty i...
Settlement behaviour of concrete faced rockfill dams : a case study
Özkuzukıran, Rıza Savaş; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
In this study settlement behaviour of Kürtün dam, which is the first concrete faced rockfill dam in Turkey, is investigated. Two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to determine the total stresses and displacements during construction and reservoir filling conditions. Hardening soil model is used in order to represent the non-linear, inelastic and stress dependent behaviour of rockfill material. Material model parameters are selected mainly referring to the previous stu...
A laboratory study of anisotropy in engineering properties of Ankara clay
İspir, Mustafa Erdem; Ergun, Mehmet Ufuk; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
Anisotropy in engineering properties of soils occurs due to the depositional process forming the soil fabric and/or different directional stresses in soil history. This study investigates the anisotropy in undrained shear strength and drained compressibility of preconsolidated, stiff and fissured Ankara Clay. The compressibility behavior is determined using standard oedometer testing while the shear strength anisotropy is investigated through large diameter unconsolidated-undrained triaxial testing on undis...
