The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of engineering design-based science education on 6th-grade students' understanding of astronomy concepts and engineer career interests. The study was administered to 6th-grade students (N=37) in a public school which is located in Kilis, Merkez. Using the convenient sampling method, a school was determined among the public schools in the Merkez district of Kilis, which was determined as the sample of the study. The study was operated as a one group pre-test post-test experimental design, and engineering design-based instruction which was prepared regarding 6th grade "Solar System and Eclipses" unit objectives, was administered to all participants. In the study, using the quantitative research method, the students' understanding of astronomy concepts and engineer career interests were operated through the pre-test and post-test application. Statistical analyzes were implemented in order to investigate the effect of engineering design-based astronomy instruction on students' understanding of astronomy concepts and engineer career interests. The results of the present study showed that there is a significant mean difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores of students taught with engineering design-based instruction (EDBI) with respect to students’ understanding of astronomy concepts. Moreover, there is a significant mean difference between gained interest pre-test and post-test scores of students taught with engineering design-based instruction (EDBI) with respect to students’ engineer career interests.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the combined and partial effects of the Integrated Reading/Study Strategy and Conceptual Physics Approach on ninth grade private high school students' achievement in and attitudes toward optics. The Integrated Reading/Study Strategy is a new strategy which was developed by integrating previously existing reading strategies of the KWL and SQ3R with classroom lecturing. The Conceptual Physics Approach is an instructional strategy developed on the basis of C...
The Contribution of Constructivist Instruction Accompanied by Concept Mapping in Enhancing Pre-service Chemistry Teachers' Conceptual Understanding of Chemistry in the Laboratory Course
Aydın, Sevgi; Aydemir, Nurdane; Boz, Yezdan; Cetin-Dindar, Ayla; BEKTAŞ, Oktay (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-12-01)
The present study aimed to evaluate whether a chemistry laboratory course called "Laboratory Experiments in Science Education" based on constructivist instruction accompanied with concept mapping enhanced pre-service chemistry teachers' conceptual understanding. Data were collected from five pre-service chemistry teachers at a university in Ankara by means of a concept test and semi-structured interviews. Results showed that pre-service teachers had some alternative conceptions about chemistry topics. Moreo...
Exploring the development of pre-service science teachers’ views on nature of science in inquiry-based laboratory instruction
Özgelen, Sinan; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Educational Sciences (2010)
The purposes of this study were to explore understanding of preservice science teachers’ (PSTs) nature of science (NOS) views during the explicit-reflective and inquiry-based laboratory instruction and investigate PSTs’ perspectives and experiences related to learning NOS aspects in the science laboratory course. This study was carried out during the Laboratory Application in Science II course. A total of 45 PSTs participated to the study. The design of the study was qualitative and exploratory in nature. The pedagogy of argumentation in science education: science teachers' instructional practices
Yilmaz, Yasemin Ozdem; Çakıroğlu, Jale; ERTEPINAR, HAMİDE; ERDURAN, Sibel (Informa UK Limited, 2017-01-01)
Argumentation has been a prominent concern in science education research and a common goal in science curriculum in many countries over the past decade. With reference to this goal, policy documents burden responsibilities on science teachers, such as involving students in dialogues and being guides in students' spoken or written argumentation. Consequently, teachers' pedagogical practices regarding argumentation gain importance due to their impact on how they incorporate this practice into their classrooms...
