OTHER MODES OF ABSTRACTION: CURATING ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE METU CAMPUS

2022-12-14
Türker, Osman Batuhan
The Other Modes of Abstraction claims that developing elementary modes of representation is a substantial method for re-reading and thus re-curating the cultural heritage. With that motivation, as a part of the Keeping It Modern Project initiated by the Getty Foundation, this study focuses on architectural elements of the METU campus. The operation of elementary excavation is defined as a tool of abstraction rather than a means of decontextualization. By introducing concepts that involve isolation, reproduction, printing, documentation and classification this study will re-read and curate the architectural space through elementary and archival approaches; not only in its current condition, but also in the historical development of ideals, desires, and stylistic necessities.

VOLUME DEFINING ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
Doğan, Uzay; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2022-8-29)
This thesis is an archival effort on the METU Campus, which focuses on the ideas of “research by design” and “conservation by documentation”. Particularly, this study focuses on the volumetric aspect of the METU Campus. This is done by proposing a systematic representation and presentation technique on the “volume defining architectural elements”, which consists of recently taken photographs, original drawings by the architects and newly constructed 3D models.
Considering a Theory of Autopoietic Culture
Boyd, Scott H. (2011-01-01)
This article questions the predominance of pragmatism and fixed points of reference in academic paradigms regarding culture and proposes a theory of autopoietic culture based on a theory of living forms developed by the biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. The central part of the theory of autopoietic culture is that culture, something originating with humanity and reflected upon by the same, is an autonomous and autonomic unity that is a network of processes and production of components that ...
Discourse Information Structure : a cognitive approach to language based on dynamic network representation
Öter, Fırat; Temürcü, Ceyhan; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2015)
The historical course of linguistics studies with an emphasis on meaning points out the requirement of a representational framework that is capable of forming a structure building bridge between the linguistic (i.e. symbolic) and cognitive (i.e. conceptual) levels. The present thesis aims to lay down some conditions for a comprehensive semantic theory, which is capable of representing all relevant levels of cognitive information involved in semantic processing. This attempt will give rise to a new, suggesti...

A DEFENSE OF MEANING ELIMINATIVISM: A CONNECTIONIST APPROACH
Toy, Tolgahan; Grünberg, David; Department of Philosophy (2022-3)
The standard approach to model how human beings understand natural languages is the symbolic, compositional approach according to which the meaning of a complex expression is a function of the meanings of its constituents. In other words, meaning plays a fundamental role in the model. In this work, because of the polysemous, flexible, dynamic, and contextual structure of natural languages, this approach is rejected. Instead, a connectionist model which eliminates the concept of meaning is proposed.
