Every day more than 60 tons of hydrolyzed lignin are produced only on one bioethanol manufacturing factory, 25000 tons per year. More than 1 million tons of lignin is produced by wood-recycling factories worldwide, which is being combusted to compensate energy costs or just stored as a waste. We suppose that there is a more sufficient way of its recycling and provide another way of lignin use, assuming the pyrolysis process as one of the pretreatment methods of its reproduction into more favorable derivatives. Pyrolysis as a technological process needs its techniques and facilities therefore we assume it is necessary to know kinetics of pyrolysis. In this study, pyrolysis of hydrolyzed lignin was investigated as a first stage of lignin pretreatment purposed to obtain favorable low molecular compounds. TG, DSC and MS analysis were performed with following full investigation of the mass changes, heat effects and volatiles of the pyrolysis process. Kinetic analysis was based on the TG data. Parameters of pyrolysis were calculated, using different isoconversional kinetic methods. Results of model-free kinetics then were used for model elaboration as a starting point for calculations. Results of TG, DSC and MS analysis at different heating rates showed that process of lignin decomposition contain four stages. Main products of pyrolysis are water, carbon oxides and hydrocarbons. Water mostly emits on first and second stages of thermal decomposition, carbon oxides appear on second and third stages and hydrocarbons characterize last two stages of pyrolysis. Kinetic analysis was performed for TG data using NETZSCH Thermokinetics software. Calculations include both model-free and model-fitting methods. Best fitted model is a sequential three-step reaction, where last two steps indicate pyrolysis stages. Activation energies for pyrolysis process locate in wide range from 75 up to 230 kJ/mol depending on stage.

Assessment of sheet metal forming processes by numerical experiments
Önder, İ. Erkan; Tekkaya, A. Erman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
Sheet metal forming technologies are challenged especially by the improvements in the automotive industry in the last decades. To fulfill the customer expectations, safety requirements and market competitions, new production technologies have been implemented. This study focuses on the assessment of conventional and new sheet metal forming technologies by performing a systematic analysis. A geometry spectrum consisting of six different circular, elliptic, quad cross-sections are selected for the assessment ...
Design improvements on mixed flow pumps by means of computational fluid dynamics
Özgen, Onur; Albayrak, Kahraman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
The demand on high efficiency pumps leads the manufacturers to develop new design and manufacturing techniques for rotodynamic pumps. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software are started to be used during the design periods for this reason in order to validate the designs before the pumps are produced. However the integration process of CFD software into the design procedure should be made carefully in order to improve the designs. In this thesis, the CFD software is aimed to be integrated into the pump ...
Corrosion behaviors of stainless steels in molten zinc aluminum alloy
Özcan, Emre; Sevinç, Naci; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2012)
High grade galvanized steel in large amounts is needed to match the increasing demand of automotive industry both in our country and in the world. Stainless steels, used in fabrication of zinc bath hardware of continuous galvanizing lines, lose their corrosion resistance due to various mechanisms in such mediums containing molten metals like zinc and aluminum. Consequently they corrode to the levels where they should be taken to maintenance or replaced. In this study, corrosion performance and the effect of...
Mechanical behavior of additively manufactured polymer composite structures and interfaces
Kepenekci, Mehmet; Özerinç, Sezer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2021-9-6)
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a technology based on the layer-by-layer production of parts. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is one of the most cost-effective and popular AM techniques for the production of polymeric structures. While the initial use of FFF was limited to thermoplastics such as PLA and ABS, recent advances enabled the printing of composite materials and structures for superior mechanical performance. Multi-material printing through dual-nozzle systems offers a unique opportunity towards t...
Evaluation of Circular Construction Works During Design Phase: An Overview of Valuation Tools

The construction industry is one of the largest producers of waste. The Circular Economy Action Plan of the EU aims to tackle this issue and aspires to enhance the sustainability of the construction industry by adopting more circular principles and bio-based material use. For this purpose, an approach is being developed that facilitates coherence between technical, economical, legal, social aspects, and business models for circular design and building with bio-based materials in the Interreg Circular Bio-Ba...
