This study aimed to investigate the effects of tungsten inert gas (TIG) repair welding on microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of Inconel 939. After welding with Inconel 625 filler under argon atmosphere, the microstructure, hardness, tensile strength, and corrosion resistance of the specimens were analyzed. The results showed that the hardness value and corrosion resistance decreased in the heat-affected zone and particularly in the fusion zone. These changes were attributed to a decrease in the amount of gamma' phase in the fusion zone, the generation of liquation cracking, and the accumulation of dislocations. Also, the cyclic hot corrosion tests were conducted on the specimens prepared from the base metal and the weldment in a synthetic molten salt environment for 30 h at 900 degrees C, which corresponds to the operating temperature. The results showed that although the weldment remained unchanged by the end of the test, in contrast, the base metal began to change after initial cycles, and a brittle oxide layer formed on the surface. Finally, the results of hot tensile tests performed at 900 degrees C showed that TIG welding has limited effects on yield strength and elongation. Welding reduced the yield strength and elongation as much as 4 and 47%, respectively, of those of the BM.

Characterization of Duplex Stainless Steel Weld Metals Obtained by Hybrid Plasma-Gas Metal Arc Welding
Yurtışık, Koray; Tirkeş, Süha; Gür, Cemil Hakan; Gürbüz, Rıza (FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2013-07-01)
Despite its high efficiency, autogenous keyhole welding is not well-accepted for duplex stainless steels because it causes excessive ferrite in as-welded duplex microstructure, which leads to a degradation in toughness and corrosion properties of the material. Combining the deep penetration characteristics of plasma arc welding in keyhole mode and metal deposition capability of gas metal arc welding, hybrid plasma - gas metal arc welding process has considered for providing a proper duplex microstructure wi...
Investigating the formation of intermetallic compounds during friction stir welding of magnesium alloy to aluminum alloy in air and under liquid nitrogen
Mofid, M. A.; Abdollah-zadeh, A.; Gür, Cemil Hakan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-03-01)
This research demonstrates the use of submerged friction stir welding under liquid nitrogen as an alternative and improved method for creating fine-grained welds, and hence, to alleviate formation of intermetallic phases. Magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy were joined by friction stir welding in two environments, namely air and liquid nitrogen, with 400 rpm rotation and 50 mm/min travel speed. The temperature profile, microstructure, scanning electron microscope energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis...
Investigation of the Mechanical Properties of Al2O3 Reinforced Nickel Composite Coatings
Yılmaz, Olgun; Karakaya, İshak (2018-03-15)
Addition of inert ceramic particles improves the mechanical and tribological properties of nickel coatings significantly. Two different surfactants; ammonium lignosulfonate (ALS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were used in a typical sulfamate nickel plating solution in varying concentrations to arrange the floatation and wetting conditions of Al2O3 particles (~300 nm) in the electrolyte. In addition to the effect of surfactants, effects of current density and...

Studies on the modification of interphase/interfaces by use of plasma in certain polymer composite systems
Akovali, G; Dilsiz, N (Wiley, 1996-04-01)
Calcium carbonate and carbon fiber surfaces were modified by use of a series of plasma polymers at different selected plasma conditions, and the effect of surface modification, mainly on the mechanical properties of composite systems prepared, was investigated. The matrices for the composite systems employed were polypropylene and epoxy, for the chalk and C fiber, respectively. Mechanical and thermal studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures revealed that inclusion surfaces, being independent ...
