Multiple Access Communications for Age Minimization in UAV Aided Data Collection

2022-01-01
Data collection with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a novel technology with many practical applications. In this paper, UAV aided data collection in sensor networks for time-critical applications is considered. Maximum age of information (AoI) is used as the performance metric, where both communication time and flight time contribute to AoI. Given that sensors form groups of two, the UAV aims to visit each line segment formed by the two sensors in each group once and to return to the data center. To minimize the maximum AoI, two trajectory design algorithms are proposed. In both algorithms, the UAV communicates with the sensors in each group through a multiple access channel. In the first algorithm, the UAV hovers on the communication time optimal point on the line segment. In the second algorithm, it hovers on the path-length optimal point. The algorithms are compared with time sharing schemes, and also with the case when all sensors are visited individually. The results reveal that multiple access transmission is optimal, when sensors are not too far apart and packet lengths are long, whereas path-length optimal trajectory is better when packet lengths are short.

Angın, Pelin (2020-11-01)
Advances in technology have enabled the increased use of autonomous systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in military operations and other critical military communications. While the use of autonomous systems has greatly facilitated military operations, provided a global view of the operational environment and eased sensitive data collection, making possible reduced casualties, it has also created a greater cyber attack surface due to its high level of automation. The existence of adversaries targ...
Detection of mini/micro unmanned air vehicle (UAV) under clutter presence and environmental effects
Dere, İsmail Gökhan; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
Detection, tracking and classification of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) is an emerging and crucial capability of radars in recent years. In the presence of clutter such as a crowded city or a foggy weather above sea surface, mini and micro UAVs become very difficult for radars to detect, track and classify. Classification information of UAV targets can be very useful for the critical infrastructures in order to provide security. Examined studies imply that kinematic and characteristic features such as Dopple...

Owilla, Eugene; Ever, Enver; Computer Engineering (2022-8)
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are an emerging technology with the potential to be used in various sectors for a wide array of applications and services. In wireless networking, UAVs are a vital part of supplementary infrastructure aimed at improv- ing coverage principally during public safety crises. Due to their relatively low cost and scalability of use, there has been a mushrooming focus into the roles that UAVs can play in ameliorating service provided to stranded ground devices. Following a public sa...
Deep learning-based reconstruction methods for near-field MIMO radar imaging
Manisalı, İrfan; Öktem, Sevinç Figen; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-6-29)
Near-field multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar imaging systems are of interest in diverse fields such as medicine, through-wall imaging, airport security, and surveillance. These computational imaging systems reconstruct the three-dimensional scene reflectivity distribution from the radar data. Hence their imaging performance largely depends on the image reconstruction method. The analytical reconstruction methods suffer from either low image quality or high computational cost. In fact, sparsity-bas...
Multilevel Object Tracking in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks for Surveillance Applications Using Graph-Based Big Data
Kucukkececi, Cihan; Yazıcı, Adnan (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2019-01-01)
Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN), for object tracking, have been used as an emerging technology in different application areas, such as health care, surveillance, and traffic control. In surveillance applications, sensor nodes produce data almost in real-time while tracking the objects in a critical area or monitoring border activities. The generated data is generally treated as big data and stored in NoSQL databases. In this paper, we present a new object tracking approach for surveillance applic...
