In this study, we examined the relationship between participating in FP and international co-authorship patterns by using a gravity model with proximity dimensions. Our estimates generally confirm the literature about the effect of various proximity types on scientific collaboration. We found that spatial proximity still matters for the cooperation between scientists, considering the progress in communication and transportation. Cognitive proximity appeared as the most influential factor in generating knowledge. Institutional proximity, represented by the similarity of language and being sibling countries, also affects the co-authorship tendencies. Nevertheless, our estimates on the impact of working together in FP projects on co-publication are not as expected. The results show a relationship between co-partnering in FP projects and co-publication behaviours. Yet, the effect is ambiguous and small. These results imply that further research is needed for the effect of international research programs on co-publishing. In addition to different proximity measures, we need meso- (such as regions) and micro-level (such as universities) analyses. Using InCites, which is based on Web of Science (WoS) data, is one of the limitations of our study since WoS coverage favours some research fields and languages. Also, we used aggregated data in this study, while scientific disciplines vary publication and collaboration behaviours. Further research is needed to deal with these limitations.

Numerical and experimental investigation of pitching / plunging airfoils in hover
Hızlı, Hasan; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2012)
In this thesis, results of the numerical and experimental study corresponding to four airfoils, namely SD7003, NACA0012, 10% thick elliptical, 10% thick flat plate, undergoing sinusoidal pure pitch, pure plunge and combined pitch-plunge types of hovering motion are presented. A number of cases are investigated consisting of different pitching and plunging amplitudes. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the aerodynamics phenomena and the vortex topology of flapping wings in motion for applica...
3d face representation and recognition using spherical harmonics
Tunçer, Fahri; Halıcı, Uğur; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
In this study, a 3D face representation and recognition method based on spherical harmonics expansion is proposed. The input data to the method is range image of the face. This data is called 2.5 dimensional. Input faces are manually marked on the two eyes, nose and chin points. In two dimensions, using the marker points, the human face is modeled as two concentric half ellipses for the selection of region of interest. These marker points are also used in three dimensions to register the faces so that the n...
Düzensiz Dalgalar Altında Düşey Yüzlü Dalgakıran Müzvarı Çevresinde Akım ve Oyulma
Karakaş, Kadir; Baykal, Cüneyt (null; 2019-05-15)
In this study, wave induced flow and scour around round head vertical wall breakwater are investigated via physical model experiments. Physical model tests are performed in the irregular wave flume of Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, METU. The flume is 26.9m in length, 6.0m in width and 1.0m in depth. The experiments are held in an inner channel of 1.5 m in width. The setup has a 1/10 inlet slope, and 10.0m long 0.2m deep false bottom. As a first step in the experim...
Ab Initio studies of pentacene on AG(111) surfaces
Demiroğlu, İlker; Danışman, Mehmet Fatih; Department of Chemistry (2010)
In this work pentacene adsorption on both flat and stepped Ag(111) surfaces were investigated by using Density Functional Theory within Projected Augmented Wave method. On the flat Ag(111) surface favorable adsorption site for a single pentacene molecule was determined to be the bridge site with an angle of 60◦ between pentacene molecular long axis and [011] lattice direction. Potential energy surface was found to be flat, especially along lattice directions. Diffusion and rotation barriers for pentacene on...
The Impact of Architectural and Urban Patterns on the Behaviour of an Exhibited Angular Size-Illusion
Djordjevic, Djordje; Djukanovic, Gordana (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2017-6-15)
This paper continues a research in which it has been confirmed that the angular size-illusion underpins a contradictory effect related to a seeming size-decrease of focused architectural and urban objects as the observer approaches them. It explores the impact of various architectural and urban patterns on the behavior of an angular size-illusion noticeable during movement. To obtain sustainable conclusions, real locations are selected and simplified. Simplification criteria are defined respecting the preco...
