Background/aim: Discrimination of consecutive sensory stimuli is imperative for proper sensory perception and behavioral response. We aimed to investigate the emergence of paired somatosensory responses in relation to the interstimulus interval (ISI) change. Materials and methods: Paired stimulus with 35 ms, 50 ms, 80 ms, 140 ms, and 500 ms ISI was applied to the median nerve and evoked responses were recorded from the primary somatosensory cortex in rats. Early and late components of both responses were analyzed in different frequency bands. Results: The amplitudes were comparable for the 1st responses (S1), while the amplitude of the 2nd responses (S2), and S2/S1 sensory gating ratio were significantly lower at 35 and 50 ms ISI values. S2/S1 ratio was close to 1 at 500 ms ISI. The duration and latency of the 2nd response was also different at 35 ms ISI. In the 2nd responses, area of early high-frequency oscillations (150–400 Hz) was significantly lower at 35 ms ISI values. Conclusion: The shaping of 2nd somatosensory response is dependent on ISIs. Early high-frequency oscillations changes without accompanying late high-frequency oscillations alterations, may indicate that reduced thalamo-cortical drive to the cortex take a part in determining the 2nd response at short ISI. Further research is required by using neuropsychiatric disorder models where somatosensory perception is impaired.

Cognitive defects in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) include socialization and communication: key behavioral capacities that separate humans from other species. Here, we analyze gene expression in the prefrontal cortex of 63 autism patients and control individuals, as well as 62 chimpanzees and macaques, from natal to adult age. We show that among all aberrant expression changes seen in ASD brains, a single aberrant expression pattern overrepresented in genes involved synaptic-related pathways is enriched in...
Psychological distress among university students: the role of mindfulness, decentering, reappraisal and emotion regulation
Kaynakci, Fatma Zehra Unlu; Güneri, Oya (2022-02-01)
This study sheds light on the extent to which the five facets of mindfulness (observing, describing, acting with awareness, nonjudging, and nonreactivity), decentering, and reappraisal predict psychological distress via emotion regulation difficulties. The study sample is comprised of 620 undergraduate students (429 females and 191 males). The participants' ages range between 18 and 30 years (M-age = 21.88, SD = 1.68). Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to test the proposed model, which explain...
A Model for psychological distress among university students: mindfulness, decentering, reframing, and indirect effect of emotion regulation difficulties
Ünlü Kaynakçı, Fatma Zehra; Güneri, Oya; Department of Educational Sciences (2017)
The study aimed to examine the relationship between five facets of mindfulness (observing, describing, acting with awareness, non-judging of experience, and non-reactivity to inner experience), reframing, decentering and psychological distress with the mediating effect of emotion regulation difficulties. The participants of this study were 620 undergraduate students (429 females and 191 males) from a state university in Ankara. Experiences Questionnaire, Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, Five Facet Mindf...
Social interaction anxiety among university students: the role of risk and protective factors
Irkörücü Küçük, Ayşe; Güneri, Oya; Department of Educational Sciences (2018)
The present study aimed to test a proposed model investigating the role of cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, rumination, and anxiety sensitivity in predicting social interaction anxiety through the indirect effect of mindfulness and experiential avoidance. A total of 645 (296 female, 349 male) undergraduate students participated in the study. Data collection instruments were the Demographic Information Form, Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, The Ruminative Resp...
Mood, Memory, and Motor Performance and the Severity of Tardive Dyskinesia
Gilleard, C. J.; Vaddadi, KS (SAGE Publications, 1986-12)
This study tested the hypothesis that the features of tardive dyskinesia were associated with motor slowing, memory impairment, and depressive apathy all of which are considered to characterize the so-called subcortical dementias. In a sample of 48 psychiatric patients all fulfilling research criteria for tardive dyskinesia and without other signs of organic illness age-independent correlations were observed between severity of orofacial dyskinesia and measures of memory, motor performance and mood...
