The worldwide phenomenon of heritage-led regeneration has been considered a panacea for dilapidated historic urban tissues to regenerate them through their cultural heritage. However, the promotion of the heritage through development plans and projects affects the physical and social aspects of historic urban tissues substantially. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the precise impacts of heritage-led regeneration due to its extensive effects on historic cities and residents. Antakya, or ancient Antioch, as a historic city has been experiencing the same process in recent decades. Since the beginning of the implementation of Antakya’s conservation development plan in 1987, the historic core of the city has undergone changes in its physical, functional, and social features. In 2009 after the revision of the conservation development plan, this process accelerated. While some of these changes can be beneficial for the city, they also cause problems like extensive interventions to historic buildings, the loss of the resident’s collective memory and spirit of the place, and the displacement of the inhabitants. At present, the Zenginler Quarter, a quarter near the historic urban core, has experienced severe transformation and there are not many studies on the impacts of heritage-led regeneration on Antakya’s tissue and residents. This thesis aims to assess the impacts of heritage-led urban regeneration projects on the historic Zenginler Quarter in Antakya. The impacts are evaluated first by defining the parameters related to Antakya’s physical, functional, social, and cultural features. Secondly, the changes in relation to these parameters are studied and analyzed. Based on the analysis of these changes, the evaluations are done in terms of physical, functional, and social aspects of the quarter. Accordingly, the impacts of heritage-led regeneration projects are assessed. This assessment enables us to present general suggestions to monitor and manage heritage-led regeneration’s impact on Antakya’s urban tissue.

Confronting the clinical relevance of biocide induced antibiotic resistance (BIOHYPO)
Yetiş, Ülkü(2012-11-20)
Biocides have been in use for hundreds of years for antisepsis, disinfection and preservation. Despite this widespread and ever increasing use most bacterial and fungal species remain susceptible to biocides. The dramatic increase and spread of resistance to antibiotics linked to reports of co- and cross-resistance between antibiotics and biocides raised speculations on potential hazard of biocide use. The overarching question which BIOHYPO is aimed to address is: has the use of biocides contributed to the ...
ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF INTERVENTIONS IN URBAN HERITAGE PLACES: SİVAS CITADEL PROJECT
Akça, İlknur; Özçakır, Özgün; Bilgin Altınöz, Ayşe Güliz; Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Department of Architecture (2022-12-16)
The societies sustain their identities through heritage places, and heritage places have diverse values. When the values are protected, the heritage place is preserved. In that regard, the things that need to be conserved in heritage places are values. Therefore, conserving cultural heritage is a value-based process. However, most of the historical heritage places in the city centers have become significant in recent years exclusively because of their central location and high land value. Especially municip...
Quantitative Infrared Thermography and Ultrasonic Testing for InSitu Assessment of Nemrut Dag Stone Statues
Tavukçuoğlu, Ayşe; Saltık, Emine Nevin (2014-08-01)
The study was focused on the in-situ non-destructive examination of limestone and sandstone statues in Nemrut DaÐ Monument to determine their state of deterioration and the target areas for the application of conservation treatments. The examinations were done by the combined use of quantitative IR thermography (QIRT) and ultrasonic testing supported by the laboratory measurements to obtain standard data from the reference samples. The in-situ QIRT analyses were promising particularly for the detection of d...
An Integrated Approach to Conservation Based on the Interrelations of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Properties
Karakul, Özlem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2011)
Studies for the conservation of historic environments have evolved from the conservation of only physical properties to an inclusive conservation approach concerning cultural properties. The significance of the cultural aspects of historic environments has been realized and discussed especially since 1950-1960s. Despite of an increasing awareness of the subject, the studies on the identification and the documentation of intangible cultural properties are still less advanced than those on tangible cult...
Assessment of the effects of adaptive reuse interventions on three apartment buildings in Beyoğlu, İstiklal street
Tamer Türer, Füsun; Özgönül, Nimet; Department of Restoration (2020-10-26)
The main subject of the thesis is the relationship between the new function and the carrying capacity of the building in adaptive reuse interventions in the context of conserving the architectural heritage. In adaptive reuse applications, the first thing that should be considered is that the new function is compatible with the building, in order to ensure that the architectural heritage assets are conserved in a healthy way. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to assess the relationship between t...
