The main subject of the thesis is the relationship between the new function and the carrying capacity of the building in adaptive reuse interventions in the context of conserving the architectural heritage. In adaptive reuse applications, the first thing that should be considered is that the new function is compatible with the building, in order to ensure that the architectural heritage assets are conserved in a healthy way. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to assess the relationship between the new function and the carrying capacity of the architectural asset in adaptive reuse interventions. For the purpose, the thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part consists of investigating the theoretical background of the concepts of adaptive reuse and assessing the effects of change in architectural assets on the values of buildings, making definitions and examining them through examples. The second part includes the history of the study area and the cases, their textures, their carrying capacity and the analysis of adaptive reuse projects applied on the cases. In the last part, the effects of the changes required by the new function in the selected adaptive reuse interventions on the values of the existing buildings are included by combining the analyzes made on the field and on the cases with the theoretical background created in the first part. In order to analyze the subject of the thesis, İstiklal Street, which constantly maintains its dynamism, and three apartment buildings adapted as cultural centers on this street were chosen as cases. İstiklal Street, which has completely changed its original function regionally, and the apartment buildings have been adapted as a function completely different from their original functions and have been designed with different approaches have formed the basis for the study.

Analysis on the mechanical properties of historical brick masonry after machinery demolition
Ucer, Deniz; Ulybin, Aleksey; Zubkov, Sergey; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira (2018-02-10)
The demolition process of a historical brick masonry building in St. Petersburg, Russia was observed as a case study and research was conducted on the possibility of reusing the resultant debris, which was composed of high quality brick masonry, as new building material. Therefore, samples from the demolition debris, i.e. brick, mortar and wall pieces were collected and tested for their mechanical properties, according to Russian standards, when available, and according to International Standards for the re...
Teaching Architectural Design Through Creative Practices
Lizondo-Sevilla, Laura; Bosch-Roig, Luis; Ferrer-Ribera, Carmen; Alapont-Ramon, José Luis (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2019-9-25)
This article provides investigation details of teaching architectural design as a fundamental part of the architectural discipline. This line of research delves into learning about the most creative action of the architectural production process, design, taking into account that creativity must be complemented by disciplinary training that combines both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Considering these observations, this text provides information about the experience accomplished by four teacher...
Assessment of seismic fragility curves for low- and mid-rise reinforced concrete frame buildings using Duzce field database
Erberik, Murat Altuğ (2005-06-01)
This paper focuses on the generation of fragility curves for low-rise and mid-rise reinforced concrete frame buildings, which constitute approximately 75% of the total building stock in Turkey and which are generally occupied for residential purposes. These buildings, which suffered extensive damage after recent earthquakes, are not designed according to the current code regulations and the supervision in the construction phase is not adequate. Hence the buildings possess many deficiencies like irregulariti...
Yeniden Kullanıma Adaptasyonda Bina Performansının Kullanıcılar Üzerinden Değerlendirilmesi
Aydın, Dicle; Yaldız, Esra (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2010)
A new approach for defining the conservation status of early Republican architecture, case study : primary school buildings in İzmir
Kul, Fatma Nurşen; Madran, Emre; Department of Architecture (2010)
International discussions on the conservation of the twentieth-century architectural heritage emphasize the diversity of the whole of the built environment of the entire century, rather than limiting consideration to canonic examples of the architectural historiography during the identification and assessment of the properties to be conserved. In contrast to this international holistic and inclusive approach, the approach to the identification and assessment of the properties in Turkey has in general been s...
