This study aims to explore the design principles for an e-textile-based STEAM training program, to examine the design, development, and usability issues of the STEAM activities, and to investigate the extent to which science teachers can apply STEAM training camp results in their courses. Design-based research was adopted for the study. After a few rounds of piloting with different samples, a STEAM module with seven hands-on activities was prepared and then applied to two independent groups of science teachers in two five-day-long camps: 20 and 19 teachers respectively. The primary data source, the interviews, was triangulated with observations, pre-and-post open-ended questions, survey data, and design artifacts. The qualitative inspection of the data resulted in five themes: experiences and opinions, perceived benefits, challenges, and transfer of camp learning and experiences. The study also provided design principles for STEAM activities. The study findings showed that teachers mostly grappled with crafting a project design with the artistic merits and values, designing a fully functioning circuit, doing short-circuiting, drawing a design sketch, making the transition from sketch to project design, and sewing an electronic circuit into the fabric. Moreover, teachers are fairly convinced that they can transfer skills and practical experiences of the camp into the classroom. Also, teachers suggested that interdisciplinary collaboration must be established not only in the preparation of the activities but also in the implementation process. Additionally, engaging in STEAM activities is perceived to induce the development of affective skills, authentic learning skills, cognitive skills, collaborative learning skills, creativity skills, and skills in fundamental subjects. Finally, the study presented a set of design guidelines for a STEAM educational camp.

The design of educational wearable technologies with teachers: Issues, challenges, and suggestions
Sat, Mustafa; Çağıltay, Kürşat (2022-01-01)
The purpose of this study is to delve into the teachers' experiences of hands-on e-textiles projects and identify the dynamics holding the pillars of an educational STEAM camp. A STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) program was prepared and then applied in two camps with two different science teachers who gathered from schools located in various districts. The interviews with teachers were triangulated with observations, camp evaluation forms, surveys, and design artifacts. The qualit...
Design and development issues for educational robotics training camps
Ucgul, Memet; Çağıltay, Kürşat (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-05-01)
The aim of this study is to explore critical design issues for educational robotics training camps and to describe how these factors should be implemented in the development of such camps. For this purpose, two robotics training camps were organized for elementary school students. The first camp had 30 children attendees, and the second had 22. As a research methodology, a multiple-case design approach was used. Interviews with children and instructors, observations, field notes, and camp evaluation forms w...
DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A QUESTION-ANSWER BASED INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN THEORY
Ataş, Amine Hatun; Yıldırım, Zahide (2017-11-18)
The purpose of this study is to document design, development, and implementation of a question-answer based instructional design theory. Sigel and Saunders (1977) state that many studies report the benefits of asking questions and being asked questions as enhancing students' thinking and reflects students' thinking process. The impact of asking question or being asked questions are inevitably influential on learning. As students experience quality questions and questioning, their awareness of learning arise...
Design and development of an online formative peer assessment environment with instructional scaffolds
Alemdağ, Ecenaz; Yıldırım, Zahide (2022-08-01)
Although formative peer assessment (FPA) has become a prevailing learning activity in different educational settings, there are not enough suggestions on how to structure it with instructional supports in online environments to optimize its benefits. Therefore, this study aims to propose design guidelines for the development of an effective online FPA environment with instructional scaffolds in the context of writing activities at high schools. To this end, an online FPA environment was designed on the basi...
Design and Implementation of a Graduate Course for Development of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge
Çetinkaya Aydın, Gamze; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Elementary Education (2022-9-02)
Following a design-based research approach, the present study aimed to develop a course design named Theory – Application – Practice (T-A-P) and investigate its effectiveness for graduate level students’ development of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). Participants’ views on the T-A-P course design, the change in their perceived competencies and self-efficacy of TPACK, and the change in their TPACK level were investigated to test the effectiveness of the course design. The proposed design...
