The purpose of this study is to examine the Classroom Mathematical Practices (CMPs) of seventh-grade students with regard to ratio and proportion concepts through the implementation of a specific instructional sequence. The study was conducted using an educational design research methodology and was based on the Classroom Hypothetical Learning Trajectory and related instructional sequence developed by Stephan et al. (2015). The instructional sequence was mainly carried out by an experienced middle-grade mathematics teacher in a public school in Yenimahalle, Ankara with the support of design team. The data was collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, field notes, and student and teacher documents. The observations mainly took place over 34 lesson hours. The argumentation components described by Toulmin (1958), taken-as-shared ideas, and the CMPs embedded in the classroom discussions were analyzed using a three-phase documentation approach to establish the CMPs (Rasmussen & Stephan, 2008). The study found five CMPs that enhanced student learning: reasoning about discrete/continuous objects and the rule of the ratio; linking and iterating composite units; covariation among composite units in a ratio table; representing ratio and proportion symbolically; and adapting strategies for comparing non-equivalent ratios. These practices demonstrate various aspects of proportional reasoning and suggest that the instructional sequence has the potential to improve the teaching of ratio and proportion concepts in terms of unitizing, linking and iterating composites representing, data organizing, conducting operations, comparing the ratios, applying build-up and multiplicative relations, creating, and analyzing equivalent ratios. This study contributes to the ongoing effort to define an instructional design for helping seventh-grade students understand ratio and proportion.

Middle school students' proportional reasoning in real life contexts in the domain of geometry and measurement
Ayan Civak, Rukiye; IŞIKSAL BOSTAN, MİNE (2019-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to examine middle school students' proportional reasoning, solution strategies and difficulties in real life contexts in the domain of geometry and measurement. The underlying reasons of the difficulties were investigated as well. Mixed research design was adopted for the aims of the study by collecting data through an achievement test from 935 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The achievement test included real life problems that required proportional reasoning, and we...
Secondary mathematics teachers' conceptions of mathematical literacy
Genc, Murat; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat (2019-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary mathematics teachers' conceptions of mathematical literacy, which are important to consider when is essential to address in designing and implementing effective approaches. Data sources included semi-structured interviews with 16 in-service mathematics teachers from different types of secondary schools. Data analysis utilized open coding in order to identify and label patterns and themes. Results indicated that teachers' conceptions of mathematical lite...
Prospective Middle School Mathematics Teachers' Covariational Reasoning for Interpreting Dynamic Events During Peer Interactions
Yemen-Karpuzcu, Secil; Ulusoy, Fadime; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2017-01-01)
This study investigated the covariational reasoning abilities of prospective middle school mathematics teachers in a task about dynamic functional events involving two simultaneously changing quantities in an individual process and also in a peer interaction process. The focus was the ways in which prospective teachers' covariational reasoning abilities re-emerge in the peer interaction process in excess of their covariational reasoning. The data sources were taken from the individual written responses of p...
Analysis of analogy use on function concept in the ninth grade mathematics textbook and classrooms
Ünver, Emel; Ubuz, Behiye; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The primary objective of the current study was to examine how analogies are used on function concept in the ninth grade mathematics textbook and classrooms. Using qualitative research procedure comprising textbook analysis and classroom observations, a picture was developed of how analogies used on function concept in ninth grade mathematics textbook and classrooms. One mathematics textbook, the primary source for observed classes was selected and analyzed for the study. Chapter entitled as “functions” in t...
The effect of creative drama based instruction on seventh grade students' achievement in ratio and proportion concepts and attitudes toward mathematics
Debreli, Esra; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Educational Sciences (2011)
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of creative drama based instruction on seventh grade students’ achievement in ratio and proportion concepts and their attitudes toward mathematics. Another purpose of this study was to investigate students’ self-reported views related to creative drama based instruction. The study was conducted in a public school in Körfez-Kocaeli with a total of 58 seventh grade students, lasting 12 lesson hours (three weeks). Thirty of the participants received ...
