Failure analysis of tapered composite structures under tensile loading
Çelik, Ozan; Parnas, Kemal Levend; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
A three dimensional finite element modeling approach is used to evaluate the effects of preliminary design variables on the performance of tapered composite laminates under tensile loading. Hashin failure criteria combined with a progressive failure algorithm is used for in-plane failure mechanisms and cohesive zone method is used for out-of-plane failures. The modeling approach is validated by a comparison with experimental results from literature. The validated model is used to examine various design vari...
Free bending vibrations of integrally-stiffened and/or stepped-thickness rectangular plates or panels with a non-central plate stiffener
Yuceoglu, U.; GEMALMAYAN, NİHAT; Sunar, O. (2007-11-16)
The present study is primarily concerned with the "Free Bending Vibrations of Integrally-Stiffened and/or Stepped-Thickness Plates or Panels with a Non-Central Plate Stiffener". The general theoretical formulation is based on the "Mindlin Plate Theory". The plate elements of the system are considered to be made of dissimilar orthotropic materials with unequal thicknesses. The transverse shear deformations and the transverse and the rotary moments of inertia of plate elements are included in the analysis. Th...
Online mining of human deep intention by proactive environment changes using deep neural networks
Er, Nur Baki; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
This thesis focuses on surfacing human deep intention, which is known or assumed, in a smart environment that consists of autonomous robotic systems which can interact with the human. Deep intentions are defined as kind of actions that humans would like to behave but pushed deeper in the stack of the intentions in a daily life. The purpose of the designed system is to observe the human in the smart room for a while and to analyze human’s behaviors to offer the optimal set of system behavior to surface a des...
Numerical investigation of delamination in L-shaped cross-ply composite bracket
Gümüş, M.; Gözlüklü, B.; Çöker, Demirkan (null; 2014-01-01)
Interlaminar normal stresses are induced with interlaminar shear stresses leading to mixed-mode delamination (MMD) in curved cross-ply composite laminates. Dynamic mixed-mode delamination is studied using explicit finite element method and Cohesive Zone Modelling Dynamic response of the specimen is compared with the experiments.
Failure analysis of advanced composites under impact by cohesive zone method
Doğan, Oğuz; Parnas, Kemal Levend; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2013)
The main objective of this study is to investigate the delamination damage of laminated composites subjected to low velocity impact. Three-dimensional finite element analyses are conducted to determine delamination area, shape and location. The impact analysis is performed by using the explicit finite element method which uses the central difference rule to integrate the equations of motion through the time. The composite structures are modeled using eight-node solid elements. The critical interfaces betwee...
