Pragmatic foundations of ontic structural realism
Akcin, Haktan; Grünberg, Teo; Department of Philosophy (2010)
This thesis defends Epistemic Structural Realism (ESR) against both Ontic Structural Realism (OSR) and Traditional Scientific Realism (TSR). It is argued that TSR cannot properly explain what actually happens throughout radical theory changes in science; in the sense that a plausible version of Scientific Realism should, somehow, satisfy Scientific Anti-Realists’ concerns about the link between “truth” and “success” of our scientific theories. On the other hand, it is claimed that OSR is not a form of Scien...
Probabilistic approach to assess URM walls with openings using discrete rigid block analysis (D-RBA)
Pulatsu, Bora; Gonen, Semih; Parisi, Fulvio; Erdogmus, Ece; Tuncay, Kağan; Funari, Marco Francesco; Lourenco, Paulo B. (2022-12-01)
This study aims to improve our current understanding of the seismic assessment of load-bearing unreinforced masonry (URM) systems by proposing a probabilistic computational modeling framework using the discrete element method (DEM). The main objective is to predict the structural behavior and capacity of URM walls with openings subjected to lateral loading, considering uncertainties in material properties. The proposed modeling strategy represents masonry as an assembly of rigid blocks interacting along the...
Probabilistic Model for the Assessment of Cyclically Induced Reconsolidation (Volumetric) Settlements
Çetin, Kemal Önder; Wu, Jiaer; Kammerer, Annie M.; Seed, Raymond B. (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2009-03-01)
A maximum likelihood framework for the probabilistic assessment of cyclically induced reconsolidation settlements of saturated cohesionless soil sites is described. For this purpose, over 200 case history sites were carefully studied. After screening for data quality and completeness, the resulting database is composed of 49 high-quality, cyclically induced ground settlement case histories from seven different earthquakes. For these case history sites, settlement predictions by currently available methods o...
Qualitative and quantitative assessment of waste generation in a refrigerator-manufacturing plant based on a waste tree and mass balance
Donmezoglu Olmez, Cansu; Aksoy, Ayşegül (2021-08-01)
In this study, wastes originating at each production station during refrigerator manufacturing were identified and classified based on a waste tree. A mass balance study revealed a total waste production factor of 0.046 kg/kg of a product of which 75.3%, 23.9%, and 0.8% were non-hazardous wastes (NHWs), packaging wastes (PWs), and hazardous wastes (HWs), respectively. Wastes produced during refrigerator manufacturing were grouped under 35 different waste codes. Waste codes that contributed more than 5% by w...
