Conformal symmetry in field theory
Huyal, Ulaş; Tekin, Bayram; Department of Physics (2011)
In this thesis, conformal transformations in d and two dimensions and the results of conformal symmetry in classical and quantum field theories are reviewed. After investigating the conformal group and its algebra, various aspects of conformal invariance in field theories, like conserved charges, correlation functions and the Ward identities are discussed. The central charge and the Virasoro algebra are briefly touched upon.
Making of new Islamism in Turkey transformation of the Islamist discourse from opposition to compliance
Özçetin, Burak; Ayata, Ayşe; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2011)
This thesis analyzes the transformation of Islamism from an anti-systemic and oppositional force to a compliant and submissive political ideology. The thesis locates the approach towards established political and economic relations at its centre. The thesis argues that the transformation, which led to formation of the Justice and Development Party, has begun in the late 1980s and early 1990s. To give the contours of this transformation, the thesis presents a detailed analysis of anti-systemic and systemic p...
Born-Infeld gravity with a unique vacuum and a massless graviton
Gullu, Ibrahim; Sisman, Tahsin Cagri; Tekin, Bayram (2015-11-04)
We construct an n-dimensional Born-Infeld-type gravity theory that has the same properties as Einstein's gravity in terms of the vacuum and particle content: Namely, the theory has a unique viable vacuum (maximally symmetric solution) and a single massless unitary spin-2 graviton about this vacuum. The Born-Infeld gravity, in some sense, is the most natural, minimal generalization of Einstein's gravity with a better UV behavior and hence is a potentially less singular theory at small distances. The Gauss-Bo...
The emergence and rise of Isis
Helvalı, Nuran; Göçer Akder, Derya; Department of Middle East Studies (2020)
This thesis research will investigate an in-depth study of the ISIS. The purpose of this study is to provide a general literature review of ISIS’s history, ideology, politics and military movements in local, regional and international dimensions. It was also aimed to locate it in other Islamist movements and find out the interaction of its movements with the international interventions. The main research question of the thesis was the how ISIS emerged and rose other in the region. The analysis of this study...
A PHASE FIELD APPROACH TO MODEL FRACTURE OF ARTERIAL WALLS
GÜLTEKİN, Osman; Dal, Hüsnü; HOLZAPFEL, Gerhard A (2016-06-10)
This study uses a recently developed phase-field approach to model fracture of arterial walls with an emphasis on aortic tissues. We start by deriving the regularized crack surface to overcome complexities inherent in sharp crack discontinuities, thereby relaxing the acute crack surface topology into a diffusive one. In fact, the regularized crack surface possesses the property of Gamma-Convergence, i.e. the sharp crack topology is restored with a vanishing length-scale parameter. Next, we deal with the con...
