The use of stochastic methods to determine the dynamic fracture strength
Esen, S; Ural, D (1999-08-28)
This paper introduces the use of stochastic methods in computing the dynamic fracture strength of rock due to blasting and compares the results with a deterministic method. Dynamic fracture strength is a function of rock properties density, p-wave velocity, s-wave velocity and dynamic tensile strength. Generated sample functions of these variables are formed by one-dimensional random processes. Stochastic methodology computes the dynamic fracture strength by incorporating the variations in these random vari...
The use of multivariate statistical techniques to establish beach debris pollution sources
Tudor, D. T.; Williams, A. T.; Randerson, P.; Ergin, Ayşen; Earll, R. E. (2002-09-01)
Beach litter found along the Bristol Channel and the coastline of mid-Wales, UK, together with litter obtained from Turkey, Malta, Spain, Tunisia and U.S.A. tourist beaches, and litter gathered from rural roads in Gloucestershire, England, UK, was analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). PCA distinguished between riverine, sewage-related debris and shipping/fishing source items, but sourcing beach user litter was more problematic. This was attributed to a difference in litter transport mechanisms. PC...

The use of generalized finite difference method in perfectly matched layer analysis
Korkut, Fuat; Tokdemir, Turgut; Mengi, Yalcin (2018-08-01)
This study deals with the use of Generalized Finite Difference Method (GFDM) in Perfectly Matched layer (PML) analysis. There are two options for performing PML analysis. First option is to express PML equations in terms of real coordinates of the points in actual (real) PML region; the second is to use governing equations (expressed in terms of complex stretching coordinates) as they are in complex PML region. The first option is implemented in this study; the implementation of the second option is under w...
