Swarm robotics: From sources of inspiration to domains of application
Şahin, Erol (2005-01-01)
Swarm robotics is a novel approach to the coordination of large numbers of relatively simple robots which takes its inspiration from social insects. This paper proposes a definition to this newly emerging approach by 1) describing the desirable properties of swarm robotic systems, as observed in the system-level functioning of social insects, 2) proposing a definition for the term swarm robotics, and putting forward a set of criteria that can be used to distinguish swarm robotics research from other multi-r...

MELT BLENDING OF ULTRA-HIGH-MOLECULAR-WEIGHT AND HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE - THE EFFECT OF MIXING RATE ON THERMAL, MECHANICAL, AND MORPHOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
TINCER, T; COSKUN, M (1993-10-01)
The blends of two different ultra high molecular weight polyethylenes (UHMWPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) were prepared in melt at different compositions and mixing rates in Brabender Torque Rheometer. The temperature build-up due to the internal friction during melt blending was recorded and evaluated with respect to the change in the torque. The temperature at maximum torque was considered the fusion point temperature of the UHMWPE in the blend. This fusion point temperature was found to depend ...
Image segmentation with unified region and boundary characteristics within recursive shortest spanning tree
Esen, E.; Alp, Y. K. (2007-06-13)
The lack of boundary information in region based image segmentation algorithms resulted in many hybrid methods that integrate the complementary information sources of region and boundary, in order to increase the segmentation performance. In compliance with this trend, we propose a novel method to unify the region and boundary characteristics within the canonical Recursive Shortest Spanning Tree algorithm. The main idea is to incorporate the boundary information in the distance metric of RSST with minor cha...
REGION-BASED IMAGE SEGMENTATION VIA GRAPH CUTS
Cigla, Cevahir; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın (2008-01-01)
A graph theoretic color image segmentation algorithm is proposed, in which the popular normalized cuts image segmentation method is improved with modifications on its graph structure. The image is represented by a weighted undirected graph, whose nodes correspond to over-segmented regions, instead of pixels, that decreases the complexity of the overall algorithm. In addition, the link weights between the nodes are calculated through the intensity similarities of the neighboring regions. The irregular distri...
