Testing the outflow theory of Malcherek by slit weir data
FERRO, Vito; Aydın, İsmail (2018-03-01)
In this paper the flow-process of a slit weir is analyzed by the outflow theory of Malcherek. Average flow velocity over the slit weir is expressed in terms of head over weir and the momentum correction coefficient. The theoretically deduced stage-discharge formula was then calibrated using experimental data obtained for a ratio between the weir and the channel width ranging from 0.05 to 0.25. The deduced stage-discharge relationship allows to measure discharge values characterized by errors which are, for ...
Testing Encoding and Retrieval Dynamics of Pairs Using Probed Recall Task
Hato, Tuğba; Kılıç Özhan, Aslı; Department of Psychology (2022-9)
In free recall, subjects tend to successively recall words studied in nearby positions, denoted as the contiguity effect, favoring the following word over the preceding one. Whereas in paired associates, recall probabilities of forward and backward recalls are approximately equal. The associative symmetry hypothesis (ASH) suggests holistic encoding of pairs, whereas the independent association hypothesis (IAH) separate the encoding of forward and backward. Two main classes of memory models aim to explain th...
Testing the impact of formal interpreting training on working memory capacity: Evidence from Turkish-English students-interpreters
ANTONOVA ÜNLÜ, ELENA; Sağın Şimşek, Sultan Çiğdem (2018-07-01)
The article presents two studies examining the impact of formal interpreting training (FIT) on Working Memory Capacity (WMC) of student-interpreters. In Study 1, we compared the storage and processing WMCs of last-year student-interpreters with the storage and processing WMCs of first-year student-interpreters and last-year Foreign Language Education (FLE) students. In Study 2, we examined the impact of FIT on the WMC of students interpreters via comparing their results on the WM tasks at the beginning and ...
Testing the interface hypothesis: L2 acquisition of English subjects and articles by Turkish learners
Geydir, Ecem; Sağın Şimşek, Sultan Çiğdem; Department of English Language Teaching (2020)
This thesis aims to expand the testing grounds of the Interface Hypothesis (IH) by investigating the acquisition of English subjects operating with pure syntax and article uses of (in)definiteness and genericity in English governed with external and internal interfaces respectively by L1-Turkish learners. Fifty-eight sophomore students who have been studying in the Department of Foreign Language Education of a state university in central Turkey were asked to complete a Grammaticality Judgement, a Discourse ...
Testing early life connectivity using otolith chemistry and particle-tracking simulations
Ashford, Julian; La Mesa, Mario; Fach Salihoğlu, Bettina Andrea; Jones, Christopher; Everson, Inigo (2010-08-01)
We measured the otolith chemistry of adult Scotia Sea icefish (Chaenocephalus aceratus), a species with a long pelagic larval phase, along the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and compared the chemistry with simulated particle transport using a circulation model. Material laid down in otolith nuclei during early life showed (i) strong heterogeneity between the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia consistent with a population boundary, (ii) evidence of finer-scale heterogeneity between sampling areas on ...
