Any switching action or lightning stroke on a transmission system causes excessive voltage, which are propagated to the electrical equipment used. The withstand capability of the electrical equipment to these overvoltages is dependent on the rate of rise, peak value and the duration of these overvoltages and are especially critical to information technology (IT) equipment. Whenever there is a probability of these overvoltages appearing across the electrical equipment, they should be limited to a safe value by the application surge arresters of the metal oxide type. However, surge arresters are expensive, an optimal location for these should be found so as to minimise the number of surge arresters used.

Protection of transmission lines against switching over voltages
Elmas, Erinç Evren; Ertaş, Arif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2004)

DC-link capacitor sizing of three-level neutral point clamped voltage source inverters for variable speed drives
Ogan, Serhat Emir; Bostancı, Emine; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2021-12-13)
A three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source inverter (VSI) topology can be advantageous in electric vehicles with a high DC-link voltage and a high switching frequency due to the flexibility in power switch selection. However, the potential oscillations in neutral point must be handled to guarantee an efficient operation of this topology. A bulky DC-link capacitor is not an option for EV applications; thus, the sizing of the DC-link capacitor considering the traction system characteristics is a...
Common mode voltage and current reduction in voltage source inverter driven three phase ac motors
Ün, Emre; Hava, Ahmet Masum; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
In this thesis various reduced common mode voltage (RCMV) pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques and active/passive common mode voltage (CMV) reduction methods for voltage source inverter driven three-phase AC motors are theoretically and practically investigated. A novel RCMV-PWM method, the near state PWM (NSPWM) method is proposed for operation at high modulation index. At low modulation index, a modified version of an existing RCMV-PWM method, AZSPWM1, termed as MAZSPWM, is proposed to mitigate the vol...
Performance of a dynamic voltage restorer for a practical situation
Oğuz, Gülçin; Ermiş, Muammer; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2004)
Among most severe power system disturbances those degrading power quality are voltage sags and transient interruptions. Even voltage sags lasting only a few tens of milliseconds are enough to bring entire production lines to standstill, causing considerable economic damage as well as endangering the production equipment. Therefore necessary measures have to be taken to protect sensitive loads which are susceptible to these voltage disturbances. Among the solution candidates such as, Uninterruptible Power Su...
Calibration of conventional measurement transformers against harmonic components by using field measurements of optical transducers and resistive-capacitive voltage transformers
Türkmen, Coşkun Aziz; Ermiş, Muammer; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
It is known from the literature that conventional voltage and current transformers measure inaccurate values for voltage and current harmonics which are parts of power quality. Maximum bandwidth of conventional current transformers, which are used in electricity transmission and distribution systems, is 1.5-2 kHz and it is lower for conventional voltage transformers. Also, it is known that; voltages in some frequency spectrum are measured higher and voltages in another frequency spectrum are measured lower ...
