In this study, it is aimed to analyse the approaches to democratisation and transition to democracy in the Third World that have occurred since the beginning of the 1980s. In order to get insights about the distinctive features of theories of democratisation on the Third World, the past debates of the 1970s and 1980s have been analysed in their historical contexts. The theories have been compared on the basis of two themes: relationship between the level of development and democracy, and state-society relations.
