Effect of recycle on fluidized-bed combustion and emission characteristics of high-sulfur lignite
Selçuk, Nevin; Harmandar, H; Altindag, H (2004-05-01)
The effect of recycle on gaseous pollutant emissions from fluidized-bed combustion of high-quality coals has extensively been investigated and is well documented. However, the effect of recycle on gaseous emissions from combustion of Turkish lignites with high ash, volatile matter, and sulfur contents has not been investigated to date. Recent trends in the utilization of indigenous lignites in fluidized-bed boilers necessitated investigation of pollutant emissions and adaptation of fluidized-bed combustion ...
Effect of cleaning process on combustion characteristics of lignite
Ozbas, Kazim Esber; Hicyilmaz, Cahit; Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Bilgen, Sedat (2000-01-01)
In this research, the results of a study on the combustion characteristics of Soma lignite before and after cleaning are presented. Non-isothermal thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) experiments were carried out for four different size fractions. Experiments were performed from ambient to 900 degrees C in air atmosphere at 10 degrees C/min heating rate. TG/DTG curves revealed three reaction regions. The first region is due to the evaporation of moisture in the coal. The second region can be called the primary reactio...
Simulation of circulating fluidized bed combustors
Göğebakan, Yusuf; Selçuk, Nevin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2006)
A dynamic mathematical model for simulation of atmospheric circulating fluidized bed combustors has been developed on the basis of first principles and empirical correlations. The model accounts for dense and dilute zone hydrodynamics, volatiles release and combustion, char particles combustion and their size distribution, and heat transfer from/to gas, particles, waterwalls and refractory. Inputs to the model include configuration and dimensions of the combustor and its internals, air and coal flows, coal ...
Effect of pre-acclimation of granular activated carbon on microbial electrolysis cell startup and performance
LaBarge, Nicole; Yılmazel Tokel, Yasemin Dilşad; Hong, Pei-Ying; Logan, Bruce E. (2017-02-01)
Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) can generate methane by fixing carbon dioxide without using expensive catalysts, but the impact of acclimation procedures on subsequent performance has not been investigated. Granular activated carbon (GAC) was used to pre-enrich electrotrophic methanogenic communities, as GAC has been shown to stimulate direct transfer of electrons between different microbial species. MEC startup" times using pre-acclimated GAC were improved compared to controls (without pre-acclimation ...
Investigation of combustion characteristics of biomass and coal mixtures in a circulating fluidized bed combustor
Varol, Murat; Atımtay, Ayse; Department of Environmental Engineering (2013)
In this study, combustion and co-combustion tests of Bursa/Orhaneli lignite with two biomass fuels (olive cake and woodchips) were carried out in a laboratory scale Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) combustor, 6 m high and 108 mm inside diameter, in order to investigate the effect of excess air ratio (l), secondary air ratio (SAR) and location of secondary air injection along the combustor wall on the emissions. Optimum l and SAR was determined for each test. The flue gas emissions were compared with limits i...
