Obsidian has been a center of interest both for geologists and archaeologists. Geologists have studied on physical and chemical properties of obsidian where archaeologists have worked on this material as a common artifact found in excavations. In this study, obsidian samples from Çatalhöyük excavations are examined using their rare earth element (REE) concentrations. Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) have been used for this purpose. A mixture (4:1) of lithium metaborate and lithium tetraborate was used for fusion of samples. Because of the low concentrations of REEs, a preconcentration step is needed. Successful recovery results have been achieved with Amberlite IR-120. The developed method is tested using the standard reference material SARM-1.

Discovery of Middle Permian volcanism in the Antalya Nappes, southern Turkey: tectonic significance and global meaning
Sahin, Nazif; Altıner, Demir; Ercengiz, M. Bulent (Informa UK Limited, 2012-09-01)
Detailed stratigraphic studies on the Middle-Upper Permian rocks of the Tahtalidag nappe (Antalya Nappes), largely exposed along the Guzelsu Corridor in central Taurides, have revealed the presence of basaltic volcanic rocks intercalated within the shallow-marine fossiliferous carbonate successions. Vitrophyric basaltic extrusions producing distinct pillows in the Kizilbag Formation severely dolomitized the associated carbonate rocks. The coeval Cukurkoy Formation, devoid of volcanic layers, is also exposed...
USE OF SEA-WATER IN THE FLOTATION OF CARBONATE RICH SEDIMENTARY PHOSPHATE ROCK
Özbelge, Hilmi Önder; ALFARISS, TF; ABDULRAZIK, AM (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1993-01-01)
There is an appreciable amount of carbonaceous sedimentary phosphate deposits in the northern Africa and the Middle East which are expected to gain importance in the near future because of the depletion of the deposits in Florida. In many of the regions where phosphate deposits are found there is a shortage of fresh water, and sea is not very far. The use of sea water instead of fresh water in flotation of carbonaceous phosphate rock is successfully demonstrated. Thus an appreciable reduction in the operati...
A Comparative study on the design of rubble mound breakwaters
Güler, Hasan Gökhan; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Rubble mound breakwaters are one of the most common coastal defense structures constructed around the world. Hudson (CERC, 1977; CERC, 1984), Van der Meer (1988) and Van Gent et al (2003) are the major stability formulas that are used to find the armour stone weight of rubble mound breakwaters. In the first part, a comparative study on major stability formulas is carried out to discuss the discrepancies in application of these design formulas. A computational tool Design Armour Stone (DAS) is developed with...
Development of a geotechnical and geophysical database for seismic zonation of the Ankara Basin, Turkey
Koçkar, Mustafa K.; Akgün, Haluk (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2008-07-01)
Engineering geological and geotechnical site characteristics were assessed and seismic hazard studies performed for the Upper Pliocene to Pleistocene fluvial and Quaternary alluvial and terrace deposits for a site west of Ankara, Turkey. Sediment conditions were determined and a soil profile was characterized by surface geophysical methods. These studies were integrated with existing in-situ characterization studies to create a seismic and geotechnical database for the site. A seismic zonation map of the si...
Effect of Weathering Tests on Microfracture Properties of the Massive and Vesicular Basalts
DURSUN, FELAT; Topal, Tamer (2020-10-03)
Petrographic investigations not only provide knowledge on the mineralogical state and provenance of rock materials, they also can be used as a strong tool for evaluating its weathering potential and durability. It is known that the type, amount, dimension, orientation and density of cracks have a great influence on the weathering of the stone material. The chemical agents, for instance, that cause weathering in rock materials, use cracks to penetrate their depths. This study aims to understand how accelerat...
