This thesis is about behaviour of traditional timber structures under lateral loads in Turkey. The timber-framed houses are the products of cultural heritage of people who live in Anatolia. These structures have performed well in earthquakes throughout the history. As a result, this study intends to present the observations on the seismic behaviours of traditional timber buildings with the help of computer-generated models. In this thesis, the general characteristics of timber are examined, the earthquake problem is briefly introduced, its effects on buildings are discussed, current knowledge on the earthquake performance of traditional Turkish timber buildings is presented, and their seismic behaviours are shown by using SAP2000 to help to better understand their behaviours in an earthquake.

The performance of medium and long span timber roof structures : a comparative study between structural timber and steel
Ertaştan, Evren; Erman, Ercüment; Department of Architecture (2005)
This thesis analyzes the performance of structural timber and steel in medium and long span roof structures. A technical background about roof structures including structural elements and roof structure types, span definitions, and classification of roof structures are discussed. Roof structures are detailed with traditional and the contemporary forms. The thesis comprises the comparison between structural timber and steel by using structural, constructional and material properties. Structural forms and the...
Comparison of design codes for seismically isolated structures
Acar, Emre; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
This study presents information on the design procedure of seismic base isolation systems. Analysis of the seismic responses of isolated structures, which is oriented to give a clear understanding of the effect of base isolation on the nature of the structure; and discussion of various isolator types are involved in this work. Seismic isolation consists essentially of the installation of mechanisms, which decouple the structure, and its contents, from potentially damaging earthquake induced ground motions. ...
Comparative study of the structure of traditional timber housing in Turkey and Japan
Matsushıta, Satsukı; Balamir, Aydan; Department of Architecture (2004)
The objective of this thesis was to examine the structural order of traditional timber houses in Turkey and Japan. A comparative analysis, based on literature and a case study was made toestablish differences of traditional timber structures in the two countries by examining their spatial organization, spans and pitches of the timber components. Four Houses were chosen for survey from Safranbolu, Turkey and Gokayama, Japan. Following two points were appeared as a conclusion: in Turkey, the structural order ...
Evaluation of seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses
Aktaş, Yasemin Didem; Şahin Güçhan, Neriman; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Architecture (2011)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame “hımış” structures, which form the major part of Turkey’s cultural heritage, from an engineering point of view. On the other hand, the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame structures was not evaluated from an engineering perspective. For the aim of seismic resistance evaluation of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses, the TUBITAK (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) p...
Observations on earthquake resistance of traditional timber-framed houses in Turkey
Şahin Güçhan, Neriman (Elsevier BV, 2007-02-01)
The aim of this study is to establish the earthquake behaviour of traditional timber-framed houses in Turkey and their technical features to serve as a guide in their conservation. This paper first discusses the destructive effects of changing settlement patterns on the traditional building stock and explores earthquake damage on traditional Turkish buildings, analysing the 1894-İstanbul, 1970-Gediz and finally 1999-Kocaeli earthquakes. A short definition is then provided of timber-framed building methods i...
