A new route to synthesis of nanocomosites by using an unsaturated polyester matrix

Toprak, Pelin
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of organoclay type and concentration on the nanocomposites synthesized by أIn-Situ Polymerizationؤ and أPrepolymerizationؤ methods. In-Situ Polymerization Method was in fact a new route which consisted of dispersing the monomers; propylene glycol, maleic anhydride and o-phthalic anhydride into the galleries of montmorillonite followed by subsequent polymerization. The Prepolymerization Method involved the addition of montmorillonite to the previously synthesized unsaturated polyester. As the first step, all the compositions were prepared by Cloisite 30B, and then for comparison of clay type, nanocomposites containing 3 wt.% of Cloisite 15A and Cloisite 25A were also synthesized. The efficiency of the two methods were compared with regards to their structural, thermal and mechanical properties. According to the results of XRD analysis, in both methods, maximum intercalation was observed when Cloisite 30B was used. An exfoliated structure was obtained in the Prepolymerization Method at 3 wt. % Cloisite 30B content. In all clay types, the increase in the d-spacings of the organoclays was higher when the Prepolymerization Method was applied. With Cloisite 30B, maximum improvement in the impact strength was obtained at 3 wt. % organoclay loading and the In-Situ Method yielded better results leading to a 77% increase in the impact strength at this organoclay loading. Among the organoclay types, Cloisite 15A was found to give rise to maximum increase in the impact strength. With the Prepolymerization Method higher improvement in flexural strength and flexural modulus was obtained owing to the lower styrene content in the crosslinking medium. The elongation at break values followed a decreasing trend with increasing clay content but did not show any significant difference when the clay types were compared.

An alternative supporting electrolyte for enzyme immobilization in conducting polymers
Kiralp, Senem; Balik, Balam; KARATAŞ, SEVİM; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Gungorb, Atilla (Elsevier BV, 2008-03-01)
In this study an alternative supporting electrolyte was used in enzyme immobilization. Invertase was studied to observe the effect of the supporting electrolyte. Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) was used as the supporting electrolyte during the electrolysis of pyrrole. The results show that the polymeric supporting electrolyte can be used instead of sodium dodecyl sulfate.
Investigation of the performance of colloidal LiFePO4 particles in suspension flow battery
Yıldız, Bayram; Aşkar, Yasemin; Coşkun, Elif; Maviş, Bora; Çınar, Simge (2021-06-12)
In this study, colloidal LiFePO4 particles were synthesized through solvothermal route. Effect of solvothermal method parameters on formation of colloidal LiFePO4 was investigated. Post-processing treatments were found effective to obtain non-aggregated colloidal particles. The rheological behavior of aqueous suspensions including electroactive material was examined in terms of salt, electroactive material concentration and carbon content. A three-electrode systems was used to analyze electrochemical perfor...
Enhancing electrochemical and electrochromic performances of carbazole comprising monomer via copolymerization with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)
Kalay, Isil; Yigit, Deniz; GÜLLÜ, Mustafa; DEPCİ, TOLGA; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Hacioglu, Serife O. (Elsevier BV, 2020-09-01)
In this study, two novel electrochromic copolymers (CoP1.3 and CoP1.5) were synthesized via electrochemical methods and characterized. The comonomers used in the synthesis were 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and a carbazole comprising monomer; 9-(2-(4-(Phenyldiazenyl) phenoxy) ethyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-9H-carbazole (M1). Carbazole containing monomer (M1) and EDOT were combined with two different comonomer feed ratios, 1: 3 and 1: 5 respectively in order to investigate the effect of increasing EDOT amo...
Development of pea flour based active films produced through different homogenization methods and their effects on lipid oxidation
Yıldız, Eda; Şümnü, Servet Gülüm; Şahin, Serpil (Elsevier BV, 2021-02-01)
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of gallic acid incorporation and homogenization method (high-speed homogenization and ultrasonication) on the physicochemical characteristics of pea flour based active films and the activity of the films against lipid oxidation. The water vapor permeability results of the active films increased by approximately 16% with the addition of gallic acid. Furthermore, active films had higher elongation and flexibility due to the plasticizing effect of gall...
A novel oxidative destruction of lignin and enzymatic digestibility of hazelnut shells
Uzuner, Sibel; Sharma-Shivappa, Ratna R.; Çekmecelioğlu, Deniz; Kolar, Praveen (2018-01-01)
This study investigated the effect of sequential oxidative (ozonolysis) pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of hazelnut shells on production of fermentable sugars. Two factors (ozone concentration and pretreatment time), which were determined to be significant by the Box-Behnken response surface methodology, were further maximized for total lignin removal, solid recovery, and total reducing sugar yield via enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated biomass using full-factorial design. The ozonolysis was perfo...
