There are some empirical formulas used in the design of rubble mound breakwaters to find the weight of armour layer stone. The effect of wave grouping and spectral shape could not put into these design formulas since their effects are still under question. The influences of wave groups and spectral shape on the stability of rubble mound breakwaters have been investigated by several researchers up to now. However, results were not conclusive in these researches, where different wave grouping and spectral shape parameters were used. This study aims to investigate the influences of wave groups and spectral shape on the stability of rubble mound breakwaters by means of hydraulic model experiments. According to the result of the experiments, the damage to breakwater armour layer is almost same for different spectrum shapes and pronounced wave grouping, under the condition of similar wave statistics. Experiments also indicated that the wave trains with same significant wave height, H1/3, but with different distribution of the heights of extreme waves which were defined as wave heights higher than H1/3 in this study, cause different damage levels. Based on these results, extended experiments were conducted to observe the effect of heights of extreme waves in a wave train on the stability of rubble mound breakwaters. Results of the experiments showed that the higher the extreme waves are, the more destructive the wave train is. By carrying experimental results into design conditions, it was shown that a wave train with high extreme waves may affect the design weight of armour stone. Finally, in order to achieve more practical tools for engineering applications, occurrence probabilities of extreme waves under different spectral shapes were obtained by a numerical simulation. As a result, for different occurrence probabilities of extreme waves under the most widely used

EFFECT OF VERTICAL SEPARATION DISTANCE ON LAMINAR NATURAL CONVECTIVE HEAT-TRANSFER OVER 2 VERTICALLY SPACED EQUITEMPERATURE HORIZONTAL CYLINDERS
Yüncü, Hafit; BATTA, A (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1994-04-01)
A numerical study of laminar natural convective heat transfer in air from a pair of equi-temperature horizontal cylinders placed one above the other in a vertical plane was carried out. Prime attention was focused on how heat transfer characteristics of the upper cylinder are affected by center-to-center separation distance between two cylinders (CCD). The study was limited to Rayleigh number ranging from 2 x 10(4) to 2 x 10(5) . The vertical center-to-center separation distance between the cylinders was va...
Effects of slip at the wall on the viscosity of suspensions with a polymeric matrix
Soltani, F; Yılmazer, Ülkü (1999-12-01)
The flow behavior of concentrated suspensions consisting of a Newtonian matrix (hydroxyl-terminated-polybutadiene, HTPB) mixed with two different sizes of aluminum powder (30% and above by volume) and two different sizes of glass beads (50% and above by volume) was investigated. The effects of the solid content, particle size, type of solid particle material, and the temperature on the shear stress and viscosity of the composite systems were studied. Slip at the wall was an important factor in suspensions w...
Effect of Weathering Tests on Microfracture Properties of the Massive and Vesicular Basalts
DURSUN, FELAT; Topal, Tamer (2020-10-03)
Petrographic investigations not only provide knowledge on the mineralogical state and provenance of rock materials, they also can be used as a strong tool for evaluating its weathering potential and durability. It is known that the type, amount, dimension, orientation and density of cracks have a great influence on the weathering of the stone material. The chemical agents, for instance, that cause weathering in rock materials, use cracks to penetrate their depths. This study aims to understand how accelerat...
Effect of Thickness on Magnetic Properties of Fe36Co36B19.2Si4.8Mo2W2 Thin Film Prepared by Thermionic Vacuum Arc
Perincek, F.; Erturk, K.; AYKOL, M.; Kucuk, I.; Akdeniz, Mahmut Vedat (Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, 2012-01-01)
Fe36Co36B19.2Si4.8Mo2W2 amorphous thin films have been produced by thermionic vacuum arc with thickness varying from 200 nm to 260 mn. X-ray diffraction has been employed to reveal a predominant amorphous phase in the as-prepared samples, although a small crystalline fraction cannot be excluded. The bulk magnetic properties of thin films were examined at room temperature using an ADE Magnetics EV9 vibrating sample magnetometer with maximum magnetic field strength of 1750 kA/m, real-time field control and dy...
Effects of Nanoparticle Geometry and Temperature on the Structural Evolution in FeCo Nanoalloys
Yalçın, Mehtap; Mehrabov, Amdulla; Akdeniz, Mahmut Vedat (Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, 2014-02-01)
Effects of nanoparticle size (2.0-6.0 rim) and shape (spherical and cubic) on structural characteristic of atomic ordering processes and order-disorder transformation in B2-type ordered equiatomic-FeCo nanoalloys have been studied by combining electronic theory of alloys in the pseudopotential approximation with Ising-type Hamiltonian site exchange Monte Carlo simulation method. Structural evolutions in amorphous nanopaxticles (2-6 nm) of Fe50Co50 alloy have been utilized via molecular dynamic simulations f...
